Gray spray in bed liner

After noticing that the Bushwacker bed rail caps on my truck were wearing through the paint I removed them and have a nice line approximatly 1 inch down from the top of the bed. I also removed the drop in liner and in just 5 month since I bought the truck, it hasworn through to the paint in a few places. (To be fair I do have a slide in camper) I now have the rubber mat that was on the bed liner in the bed.



I would like to get a light gray spray in bed liner. I talked with one Line-x dealer and color did not seem to be a problem, just another $150. I talked to a second Line-x dealer and he said that he will not spray color, because it will change color. In time the gray would start looking green.



Does anybody have a non-black spray in liner and how does it look? If possible I would like to get away from black because it is so hot.

You will be hard pressed to find one of the "lighter" colors that does not change colors over time. White and gray tend to yellow or green, red turns pink over time, and so forth. Even the Reflex liner in mine(Reflex is considered second generation over Rhino and Line-X) the installer advised against color even though it has a lifetime guarantee/warrantee because he knew I would be calling in on the warrantee.



Best advice would be to go with Black. Any color liner is going to absorb a considerable amount of heat simply do to the type of material and the fact that is exposed to nearly constant sunlight during the day.

Here's mine--sorry it's not a very good view, but it's the best I have in my gallery right now. This is a Rhino-Linings, and it's a very good match for my bright silver paint. It was sprayed in Jan or Feb this year.

I have Line-X in my truck and I am very happy with it. It is black though, but looks very good in a white truck. It has been in 5 years and still looks like new. A friend has gray in his and it looks kind of washed out after about 3 years, different brand though and I can't remember which one, but not Rino.

All I know is that I know several people with both Line-X and Rhino that had the bed done in the color match for the driftwood paint color and none of them are happy over a year later it DOES tunr green at some point my Line-X dealer said he will not do it and if the customer demands it he will not waranty the color fade as he knows it will fade and turn color.

shannon I have a gray rhino liner on my 1995 . been on since new. has not faded or peeled and still looks new. its rarely been exposed to the sun since i keep a campertop or snap on cover over it. that my be the key to keep it from discoloring. it cost $50. more than black.

My folks had the rhino lining in this truck done to match the agate color of the interior and I can tell it has faded a bit, but overall it still looks very close to original and it is five years old now. (done in october of 98)

Rhino Liner

I have had a grey Rhino Liner since 97. It has turned a very slight greenish tint. The dealer says it is due to UV. He said sparying over it with the UV protectant will return it to the original grey. Don't know if I wnt to try or not. It is not that bad. most people don't notice.

I think I have myself talked into a Graphite Gray Rhino lining. My truck is Graphite so it should look good. Only cost $60 more locally. The dealer said that it might fade by the Rhino has some kind of protectant. Now I have to convince myself, "It's only money, I'll make more!"

My '95 has a Rhino liner in it that was colored green to match the truck back in '95 when it was installed. This truck has been outside it's whole life and the liner looks fine to me. At least as far as green is concerned, there doesn't look to be a problem with fading.

I had a black Rhino Liner in my 95 that faded to a dark grey. In my 98 I went with dark grey and it turned sort of green. In my Ford I went with black again and it has started to fade to grey.

Check out Perma-Tech. The colors(including gray) that we sprayed over a year ago in our customer's trucks, have not faded or changed. (Hey Duane, you reading this? Want to tell the members how you like your gray bedliner?) In fact, it is part of their corporate guarantee that the material won't fade or drastically change color. Line-X requires an additional top-coat, for an extra charge. With Perma-Tech, the UV resistance is "built-in" to the chemical mix.

www.perma-tech.com and, yes, I'm a dealer. BTW, the black sprayed in my own truck hasn't faded, after 15 months, and even in the hot sun, it is never hot to the touch.

I had the Perma-tech liner put in because it is not suppose to fade and that it was 'sticky' so things would not slide around.



So far no fading in 6 months, all outside. But only like two weeks of real sunshine.



My problem is that I hauled some gravel and bark, I tried to be careful when shoveling the stuff out but I can now see several spots of my white paint where the Perma-Tech tore off. All in all I would NOT buy Perma-Tech again. I do not think that this stuff will hold up very well.



It may have been my installer who BTW I am not happy with, putting it on too thin or not prepping the truck properly. They did offer to grind the entire thing out and reapply a new coating. But they said that they would have to come down on the outside of the bead rails at least another 1/2 inch to an inch. They came down more than I wanted them to, to begin with.

I don't know of any spray-in bedliner that will not tear or gouge when you take a shovel to it. The Perma-Tech lining is actually used in dump trucks and other industrial coatings with great success.

There are alternatives, such as rental dump trailers, or the cheap sliding crank mat "unloader" they used to sell on TV which you can now buy at KMart.

No way would I haul gravel in my truck, not even 10 years from now.

My budy did a Carefree Coatings liner and the color still looks good and has no problems. My 92 had Rhino and it held up really good even to a spilled battery that sat there for a while.

I found a cheap bedliner than works well with highway base (sand and gravel mix). It is a $14 sheet of tempered hardboard. It did not mind getting a shovel stuck to it. I took a couple of yard and it did not seem to mind the drop from the front loader either. When you are all done you just slide it off the gate and take a broom to it.

It looks no worse for wear and the bed still has shiney pain on it.



Dont get the untempered stuff. The tempered hardboard is chocolate brown. And smooth on both sides.

I had the Permatech in my last truck...

I would do it again. It was in there for over two years (black), and it never faded. If it peeled off, it was definately installer error. Make sure that the installer roughs up the ENTIRE area to be sprayed. Mine did not and it peeled on the tailgate. You could see shiny paint underneath. Ask the installer to show you a truck that is about to get sprayed. See how he preps the truck and look for shiny spots. I felt pretty screwed when I found out that my installer is known for not doing a thorough job of prep work.



My friend has a Line x in his truck and he says it's starting to get chalky.

I've had a "Speedliner" brand in my '01 since new. color still looks great and other than some surface wear ( from abuse) it is holding up great, no tears. Mine has the Kevlar additive which makes it twice as strong as other spray in liners. I just installed gray in my Jeep wrangler 7 months ago. It sits in the sun most of the time with the top off and still looks as good as the day it was put in

I had the gray Rhino sprayed in my truck almost 7 years ago. It hhas held up okay, but has spent much of it's life under a canopy.
