Grease for 05 4X4 frt drive shaft.

Gentlemen

I know this has been brought up before but, how are you guys greasing the front driveshafts?. This is a pic of the sticker that is near the radiator. I cannot find a way to grease them (no zerk). Are they sealed?. Do you remove the driveshaft?.

I would imagine that there has to be some kind of flush fitting grease fitting in the front driveshaft. I'm going to pull mine off when I get my truck so I can dispell this myth. I think just nobody wants to remove the driveshaft to look and find out if there is actually a fitting there. I bet the center of the CV is greasable, especially because it spins all the time at high speed and I bet that ball gets pretty hot in the center.

I got off my A** and actually pulled out the owners manual "when all else fails read the directions". Right there on page 354 under the heading "Front Axel Universal Drive Joints And Pivot Bearings" (The front axel universal joint and pivot bearings on this vehical are permanently lubricated and do not require servicing. ) I also crawled under the beast and verified that there is no way the grease them without removing the drive shaft, I'm also going to talk with ol Jerry over at Glenn E Thomas Dodge and get the low down.

I had made a post on it. If you do a search it will come up with a picture of the CV on the shaft. It IS greaseable. there is a small fish eye fitting.

I haven't gone out and checked mine on my 03 but most double cardon joints like the one in the picture have a ball and socket setup in between the two universal joints. If you look closely at the middle section in between the u-joints you should see a small disc about 1/4 to 3/8" in diameter with a small hole in the middle of it about as big as a pencil lead or a little smaller. That small hole is where the grease goes. You need a needle fitting to grease this. A Napa, Carquest, etc. will probably have these and they come in a couple of styles. One that snaps on the end of the existing fitting on your gun and another that actually screws on the hose itself.

The '03 shafts are NOT greasable, IIRC it was the '05 model year that introduced the greaseable center.

The "fish eye" as people are referring to are a high pressure grease fitting. They're common on aircraft and there's a special adaptor available to grease them.

Is the spec'd "MS 6560 Lithium Base Grease" a good all around grease to use for this as well as all the other (2 or 3) chassis zerks? I have to buy some to have on hand as the ol grese gun is shooting blanks. The stuff I had in there prior was pumped from the dealers stock whe I worked for GM years ago. Don't know exactly what type it was. Should I clean out the remaining traces of the leftover stuff or is it compatable with the above type that I will refill it with?
