What is the "plug in perculator"? Is this some kind of electric heater?

I am a bit skeptical about heating the oil with the expectation that you will be able to run WVO thru a cold engine block. Part of the problem is, based on the study linked below, the WVO burns properly only when it is heated to a temperature of between 212 and 266 deg F and at pressures above 20 bars. If you read the study below, what it seems to say, is that the VO doesn't burn properly at the lower temps and pressures that petroleum based No. 2, and failure to adjust for that will lead to undesirable carbon polymerization in the combustion chamber of the engine. If you run the VO in a cold engine, you are not taking advantage of the heating effect of the hot engine on the fuel system, though I'm not sure how hot the VO will get between the tank and the injector nozzle on a hot engine.

"With vegetable oil fuels pockets of burning could be seen, some of which persisted for long times suggesting that these were larger droplets which burned as a diffusion flame for times longer than the available than those available in an engine. Thus they were potential carbonising nuclei for the walls of a burner or engine. " *

*"As a summary, it may be recommended, for any attempt of using VO in an engine, to use the rape seed oil at relatively high temperature, of order 100-130 °C. "

"Hey Hoodoo,

great to see other commonrail vegy conversions. Did the installer use the normal greasecar pex line for your HIH?

What is the blue thing above the exhaust manifold? Fuel pump?

What is inside of the big foil wrapped package on the drivers side of the engine? Filter?

The "blue thing" is basically a perculator or at least that's what I call it. It has a plug in and I can hook it up to 110 and it will pump the coolant in the system through the veg system, tank and block and warm it at the same time. This reduces the amount of time you have to wait for your engine to get the system up to operating temperature. Lowest I have ran at is 130 degrees and the highest I have seen is 170 degrees

Yep the big foil package is the greasecar supplied filter. I believe he used normal pex line... not a 100% sure. The installer normally uses Greasecar supplied parts but he has been doing them for quite a while and knows what to use and what to replace. He has a Jeep liberty CRD and a 99 2nd gen 24 valve that both run on grease. He also is in the process of putting a centrifuge in shop to further refine the waste oil.

Interesting, so what exactly do you need to do to the WVO before dumping it in the tank?
Obviously you need to filter do get all the chunks and things that the restaurant doesn't take out also you need to heat the oil one to get it flowing but also to dewater. When you heat it the oil and water naturally seperate and then you can drain off the water and then filter one more time if can. The biggest thing is getting rid of the water and the best test of that is the "hot pan" trick, put a little of your filtered oil in a hot pan and if it pops it still has water.

Is that the standard greasecar filter inside there?

What are you using for a fuel pump?

What is your fuel pressure and what does it do under load?

Not a 100% sure on the filter, installer recommended using a different filter rather than the greasecar one.

I'ts an electric fuel pump, not a FASS, not sure of the brand but he didn't speak to highly of the FASS vegetable fuel pump.

Driving on Diesel it sits at about 25 pounds as soon as I switch to veg it drops to about 15. Doug, the installer, highly recommended having the fuel pressure gauge installed as this gives me a clue as to any problems such blocked lines or fuel filter starting to plug.
