I tried to grease my front u-joint on my 05 but was unsuccessful, I think I need a different grease needle. Can someone tell me what works?

Is this on the u-joint closest to the transfer case that is going to the front axle? Can you turn this front drive shaft some how with out going into four wheel and moving?

When I grease mine I just jack up one of the front wheels so I can turn the driveshaft to the proper position for access to the grease fitting. It needs to be in just the right position to reach it with the grease needle. The needle I have is about 5 inches long or so overall, with the tip about 2 inches. It's just a basic grease needle that I got at the local parts shop. I'll try to post a pic of it if that'll help.

ROGER, yes it's the (double) u-joint closest to the transfer case on the front driveshaft.

I just did mine (finally found it)

What a mess it made underneith after I drove it. Gease everywhere.

What's the purpose for this little fitting anyway?

I just serviced my truck for the second time last weekend, I looked for quiet some time for these so called fittings. There is no place on any u-joint, front or rear to grease. I did everything I could to try and find them without removing the shaft. I have been a line mechanic on class 8 trucks for 20+ years and seen a variety of different grease fittings, and there is no such animal on my truck.

I would have never found it withoiut seeing the picture posted on this site. It is not on the u-joint itself. It is on th knuckle behind the front u-joint, it greases the ball inside the knuckle. It is a fisheye type fitting serviced with a needle type adapter.

I think my problem is my needle is to short ,I will get a longer one an try again.

Hoefler, does yours have the sticker on the metal up front when you open the hood? The sticker shows a picture of the joint and says to grease it at every oil change. If you don't have the sticker it's possible you still have the older driveshaft because of your early production date.

I believe the needle you need is almost the size of a pencil and is tapered to a point... it isn't a true "needle", like a hyperdermic needle.

Bravo REndres. I had the DODGE serviceman to mark it with chalk ( so I could find it ) and I still can't. Thanks to your picture, I think I can. Is it closer to the X-fer case or front differential, above the 'hole' in the skid plate?

It is at the transfer case end ,the picture shows the front drive line on the left. You can see where the tube is welded to the knuckle at lower left corner in the pic. It isnt easy to find. Also the owners manual shows the general location under maintenance.

This is what I use on another vehicle, but should work for you.

I went to a local dealer a few days back, service manager told me there is no such grease point . I had trouble finding mine, but this site showed me. but he was useless.

It took me a while to find it also. Lay with your head under the transmissin looking past the front of the cross member, rotate the driveline till you see the lube point just between the forward CV u-joint and the CV center section. Good luck!

Greasing Front Driveshaft

Guys, I just found and greased the front driveshaft and it's just like the

picture shows. I jacked up one side of the front axle and rotated it while

looking very carefully for the small spring-loaded ball. I used an approx. 2"

long needle (Like in the picture that's already posted) and gave it 2 pumps

with the grease gun which was too much because it oozed out around the

entire joint and was gobs of fun to try to clean off the excess grease.

(I used Amsoil multi-purpose EP grease) After driving it around it flung the

excess grease all over the place soooo... . be gentle with the grease gun.
