Greasing u-joint.

I sure wish I had seen that before my joint was ruined. I have a rebuild kit coming, so I guess I had better check for the grease hole when I repair the driveshaft.

I notice that you guys talk of lifting a wheel to turn the driveshaft, which trucks do not have the disconnecting front axle ?

are the axles the same on the manual shift transfer cases and the electric shift??????

Also, this only affects the 05 and up trucks... long after the CAD was eliminated.



Lifting the front wheel allows you to spin the driveshaft obviously.



And again, this does not apply any grease to either ujoint... it only greases the ball and socket that aligns the two halves of the "CV" or double-cardan joint... it had nothing to do with the ujoints. If you think this will make your ujoints last longer, it won't.

I went to a local dealer a few days back, service manager told me there is no such grease point . I had trouble finding mine, but this site showed me. but he was useless.

Whatcha expect ?? !!

I don't see a grease fitting anywhere on my 2003. Anybody else with a 2003 that found it?

They are only found on the 2005 and up trucks... my 2004. 5 doesn't have them either. Even the replacement driveshaft I got two months ago didn't have it... it must be model year specific.

If you want to stop the grease from flinging all over, grease it and then put a few turns of masking tape around the joint. Drive it for a day and then cut and remove the tape. Most of the grease should be on the tape or the outside of the joint where you can wipe it off.

What A Grease Fitting!

Man I am worked up! I am crazy anal about my trucks and now I find out that my 05 may have a grease fitting that has gone dry for 6000 miles! Yes that is all I have on the truck right now. Its a Dec 2004 build so I will have to go and look and see if it has one. Tell me other than this possible grease fitting and the tie rod end fittings are there any more that I need to be made aware of? Thanks.

I have an '06 3500 4x4. I found the front driveshaft grease fitting and have attempted to grease it at each oil change. My problem is how can you tell if the appropriate area is being lubed?? Usually, I end up with gobs of grease all around the needle of the grease gun. All it looks like is a mess. I have done my own maintenance for 50 years, but have never come across a lube fitting that made you wonder if the spot requiring the grease got it. Can anyone tell me how I can be sure if the lube was done effectively?? What do you guys/gals look for to be sure?? Thanks, Chuck

I end up with gobs of grease all around the needle of the grease gun.

Your not seating the grease gun tip onto the fitting, if you get it seated you should not have any grease on the fitting(maybe a little), and if you have grease coming out the fitting you might need to replace the fitting.

I just replaced my front drive shaft in my '03, and the shop put in a fitting for me. Told me to lube it every 5k or so...

I just did my lubrication of the drive line. I did not look forward to it. But to my surprise it took me 10 minutes to set up the truck and get my light under the truck. It took only 30 sec to lube the joint. I see a pic of the grease gun on page one. I use a gun with a 12 inch flex hose and can be squeezed with one hand. Paint the spot so you can find it the next time. I use a needle as in the pic. Also I lay with my feet to the passagers side and my head under the drivers side. Easy to turn the tire and get at the fish eye. My cousin bought a truck 6 months after me. The local shop said I didn’t have a fitting. My cousin has never had his u-joint lubricated because the shop does his maintained and I do my own.

Great Idea to paint the spot! You can wrap masking tape around the joint for a few miles so it catches the "sling off" and doesn't get grease all over the bottom of the truck.
