3rd Gen 5ver hitch?

ArcticFox Forum

I saw a post on this site, a long time ago, where a man used an infrared thermometer to check out his trailer hubs, tires, rear end, etc, every time he fueled up.

Last week, in the my search for a good mulitmeter to use at home, at work and on my truck (with trialer light problems mainly), I found a multimeter that has a IR Thermommeter built in in, as well as the ability to read type K TC's. I paid $ 129 for a multimeter that seems to do the work of a $100 meter and a $70 IR thermometer. It is an Extech model 470, I got mine at reliablitydirect.com.

Just thought somebody would like to know.

I love having my IR thermometer. Point and shoot any temp you want. Wheel hubs/brakes, thermostats, diffs. , etc... . Especially useful in the boat when I want to compare both exhaust manifold riser temps on each engine if one engine is running warmer than the other.

The only issue I have is keeping it out of the kids hands - they love checking temps around the house.

One of the most used tools I have.

I also use it to check stuffing box temps. It allows you to tighten the stuffing to reduce the drip and not overheat it.

Around here the police occasionally use IR cameras to check dump truck and other large truck brakes to see if they are operational. They do it from the side of the road and pull over the offenders (those with cool hubs when they shouldn't be). I think that's a quality idea.

asmportant as checking brakes is checking hub temp for bearings. For 25 years when fueling I always walk around and check tires and lay hand on hubs to see if they are hot or not. Caught a wheel bearing that was too tight after dealer did a brake job about 2000 miles from home 20 years ago. Shoot and read would make it cleaner and fun. :p
