Thinking a little weather trivia this afternoon. . . does anyone know what US city has seen the greatest temperature extremes? The Plains states have the greatest seasonal temp swings, so I would think any such location would be found in South Dakota. Gann Valley, SD has to be one candidate. Their highest ever temp is a smoking 120F in July 1936, the coldest a bitter -44F in Jan. 1994, giving that city a huge 164F range. Our location can't touch that! Tri Cities, Wash. extremes are 115F down to -23, a 138F range, and 118F/-14F = 132F at Ice Harbor a few miles to the NE.

At the other extreme are the coastal regions of the Pacific, ie San Diego's extremes are 111F and 29F = 82F range. Seattle has a "perfect" score. . . hottest is 100F, coldest ever 0F.

Here in salt Lake City, we get up to 100 to 110... . and the lowest I've seen here is -15

Park city which is up in the mountains gets up close to 100 and last night it got down to -15... ... We are trying to get UP to feezing by the end of the week... .

Spearfish South Dakota had the temp rise from -4 deg F to 45 deg F in 2 min.

This was recorded in Jan. 22, 1943.

It had something to with the winds and how they come down the mountains. I can't remember all the details.

Tramplineman wasn't too far off... . Embarrass, MN, 2/3/1996 got down to -60F. and they also had a high temperature of 98F. on 7/24/1997. Half of the population around here went out and built their snow huts and slept outside on the evening of 2/3/1996.

Warmer in the huts than in the houses that night... . didn't have to listen to the furnace kicking on either... .

Trampline, got the name of a town where it's been around -80?

Embarrass, MN. It was 60 below without the wind, was closer to 80 below with wind. The weather and news channels seem to leave out the small towns in their reports. It's always colder around here than the rest of the nation.

OK Embarras' extreme range is 98F to -60F, giving it a 158F range, so it's a little short of Gann Valley SD.

Yes the weather channel can be pretty clueless. One day they were making a point to mention it was 110 in Phoenix, not noticing the 112 here. We're not a large city but are over 60k pop, 150k or so counting all Tri Cities.

jgillot that is an interesting link. It's not a comprehensive listing by any means, I know there are a lot more cities falling in the ranges they list for temp extremes.

The greatest extreme temp I know for a specific US city is Ft Yukon, Alaska.

It's greatest high recorded is 97 degs.

It's greatest low was -69 degs.

A swing of 166 degrees.

obviously Mt. Washington, NH sucks!

Yeah, it made 7 out of 15 on that site, and all the freeze your a** off ones, too... ... I've hiked the boulder in November, that was an awesome experience, although I think next time I'll wait until its warmer  Somehow 50mph winds and zero degrees before the wind chill was a little much to be loitering around in :-laf It was fun, though, definately something I'll never forget. That was my sophomore year of highschool, the outing club was hiking the AT in New Hampshire from Hanover to Mt. Washington in sections. I'm fully planning on doing it again sometime in the future.

The thing to remember is Embarras's theremometer didn't go any lower than -60 f. Tower mn also competes against Embarras for lowest temps. Wait till January and they will make national headlines for coldest temps in the lower 48.
