Green Handled GAS pumps, BEWARE!!!

Somebody got a brilliant idea to put Green nozzle covers on gasoline pumps and black handles on Diesel pumps. Look for the green ULSD label on your pump before you fuel up.

I have observed just the opposite. Green on Diesel, and black on Gasolene.

That is normal. I'm talking about something that's only happened recently, and drivers need to know to watch for. Saw it at a BP yesterday. Almost thought it was an April Fool joke.

Never have counted on the handle colors, nor have I resorted to sniffing the nozzle. Usually, a diesel nozzle will have oily residue that a gas will not anyway, so it's a bit obvious. I grew up around diesel tractors, so this is second natured to me. Some, maybe not so much.

Well I just return from a trip in Spain. Black for diesel and green for gas. I did the sniff test just to be sure... .

Also we complain about price, $4 per gallon on diesel. #@$%!

The reason for the sniff test is that if the delivery driver dumped gasoline into the diesel tank, you may still have the oily residue but will still smell the gasoline content. A mix at delivery can happen. This is also why you shouldn't stop to talk to a fuel delivery driver when he is making a drop, he may loose track of what he is doing, and can cause a mix.

And I thought I was the only one. LOL. I worked for an oil company in MD and heard drivers getting distracted and "accidently" dropping the wrong load in the wrong tank.

Shamrock had green, yellow and red for the three grades of gas for years. Now that Valero has bought them out diesel is yellow. I have actually seen very few stations in this area that use green for diesel.

I wish they had a standard color for each type of fuel. I really dont see what the big deal would be for implementing this. Its not like there are thousands and thousands of different fuel handle makers out there. So, I would think the cost would be a non issue. Especially since it seems the pumps are usually upgraded every couple years with new technology. Heck, they got all the computer motherboard manufactures to use the same colors on all the plugs on the back of PCs, ya think they could agree with a standard on colored fuel handles across the US.

Yeah, I am glad I fuel up at a place with seperate islands and tank fills. Short of the driver dropping the wrong fuel, I am safe. And I think these guys get whole tankers at a time, as they service a lot of truckers. So it would be even less likely I think. Thanks for the heads up though. I am gonna drive to TN this summer, and could have screwed up bad.

maybe it is just me, but i read the diesel label on the pump before fueling... up here we have black,red,green,yellow & blue handles on the diesel pumps depending on station

Never seen anything but green myself. I would guess, dont know for sure, that when they fill the underground tanks theres some kind of difference in the fill hole from gas to diesel to make it more than just the guy reading the cap on the tank.

I saw the same thing in the UK last summer. It was enough just to remember what side of the car the filler was on since I was on the wrong side. :-laf

I don't pay much attention to the way they do it at the fuel stations, but on the farm, the CO-OP fuel driver puts a dipstick in the tank to see how full it is, and he'll be able to tell if it's DF2 or Gasoline (MoGas/Petrol). Of course, they know the BIG tank is off-road diesel, so that's not likely to get screwed up. He also has a tube of paste to put on the stick to check for water in the tank. If it turns wrong color, you have water problems.

I just look for the set of pumps with the big oil slick around them :-laf
