Why did the factory use the #6 wire to 12 gauge wire with fuse-able links? Are there an ill effects to replace the with just #6 battery cable?

When I replaced mine I bought fusible link from Amazon and fixed it.

Good info, Thanks! They just splice to the larger wire? I am working on replacing the oem battery terminals that cracked and noticed how ratty these wires looked. I'll likely just cover them with wire loom to try an keep them protected.

Yes, usually with a crimp connector plus soldering and heat shrink on top.
