My 04. 5 is grinding going into 5th gear. Just started today. Was happily driving along and it started grinding. Does it on the upshift and downshift. Never did this before. Has done it on every shift since. 117,000 km's on the truck. 2,000 km's out of warranty. NEVER changed fluids in it. What's going on? Every other gear is normal.

Never change the fluid! I would change the fluid and see what comes out, if that looks ok. Add new fluid and give it a drive. My guess is low fluid o bad secro.

Fluid Change

Going by the book, our owner's manual states that the NV5600 is designed to NEVER have the fluid changed. However the fluid level does need to be maintained at the proper level. I have experience as a machinist for over 10 years and my best guess would be the brass particulate often found in NV5600 transmission fluid is supposed to be there in order to lubricate the steel gears. MOST IMPORTANT the fluid level(gear oil) MUST BE MAINTAINED AT THE PROPER LEVEL. To the best of my knowledge I will answer all questions fielded to this reply.

I sadly was following the book. Anyways I guess my first action will be to change fluid. After that does not work I will beg and plead with my dealership to fix it up. LOL Not much more I can do. I liked my old 5th gear without the huge grind everytime. 117,000 km's is around 72,000 miles. I will check fluid level in it first. That way I might have a fightin chance with dealership because they have done all the servicing and have checked off the box that says manual trans fluid level OK.

Guess it was a stupid question. Let me try this again. Should the fluid be to the BOTTOM of the fill hole? LOL

Alot of people, including those who rebuilt my 5600 recently say to over fill it a qt. , usually to the top most bolt hole on the PTO cover. 5-5. 5 qts. usually does it. Sounds like it may be rebuild time though! :(
