ok, i am planning on buying a used dodge diesel, 3/4 ton, 4X4; i want a reliable vehicle and will pay good money for it, but i am having a hard time finding a 12 valve with reasonable miles (under 150K) for under $17K. $17K is a lot of $ for me, so... are 1st gen ctd's reliable? will 1st gens. have rubber fuel components (i intend to use biodiesel); why even consider a 12V if i can get a low mile older 1st gen for $5-10K cheaper? btw, i will mainly be using the truck on a farm and for construction projects, only occasional pulling... any advice would be appreciated.

I have noted that a number of others have made the same mistake. Bushwacker or Steve, could you post this message prominently at the head of FAQ forum so the novice won't make this mistake. I am sure that some don't realize that they are supposed to HAVE the answer if they post here.

Wow, it seems incredible to me that there are no 1st Gens around with under 150k for less than $17k! I bought mine two years ago with 137k miles for $8k, and it is rust-free.

GRoche, if you want to buy mine for $17k (it just turned 148k miles), I'll be happy to let her go for that price!! :)

Ooops, I guess I should have read the first post better. I now see that GRoche was talking about 2nd Gen - 12v trucks selling for $17k and up. My bad!!

The offer to sell mine for $17k still stands, though. ;)

Maybe this helps... maybe this doesn't. I have only had my first gen since July 5th. My reasons for a 1st gen over 2nd gen.

Pros...

1) Looks, the 1st gens are more truck-like

2) Less electrical and computers

3) Nearly infinite room under the hood <-most important

4) Cheaper to buy as opposed to the fresh new style with '94 and up.

5) Not really different then my 1973 w250

6) If I was in need of second generation performance I can do the upgrades

Cons... .

1) Lack of front end stuff, 2nd gen front end mod parts seem to be a dime a dozen

2) Turning radius similar to that of the Lusitania.

3) Not as comfortable as first class accomodations on the Lusitania unless you are making a comparative study of its present state.

I made my purchase based on Pros 1-4 discovered 5&6 and I still don't care about the cons. Somebody might mistaken a 1994 for something newer, that can't possibly happen with a 1st gen...
