Both of those lockers change out the carrier. While it's true you don't take out the pinion and therefor don't change pinion preload, or pinion depth. A new carrier can and will mess up backlash. About half the time a new carrier will install using the old shim setup and work, but the other half of the time there can be either no backlash or excessive backlash. DO NOT put in a new carrier without checking the backlash. I have set up hundreds of ring and pinions, and 20-30 carrier replacements (arb, detroit etc) and it's a 50/50 chance.

I apoligize for that, I didn't intend for it to be the definitive how to on changing carriers. If your not familiar with changing gears don't do it, I did make it seem like it was that easy. I learned how to do it because I didn't like the ridiculously high prices I was always quoted. ALWAYS check the back lash with the paint or my prefered method with a dial indicator.
