I know your just stirring up doo and I haven't thought much about it, but I'm assuming the rear axles are full floating  like any decent rig should be. I'll have to check when I go home tonight. If I'm wrong you have permission to call me names and hurl insults. :D

Once, upon a time I had a willys wagon I stuck a Buick V6 and Warn OD in, pimped it out. Actually, in them days my idea of pimping was carpeting the interior panels and seats and building full length boxes for my carpenter tools in the back. Had 7. 50x16s on it. While careening around a corner I had a rear axle snap. spark show  Made me a believer in full floating rear ends.

I'm already signed up, depending on price, because I like the option of being in two wheel drive and low range for some stuff.

Just so ya know the front axles are full floating also ;) yes the rears are.

So you are going to spend $2000. Let say you gained 2mpg, which I don't think you will pick up any where near that much.

But if you did it would take about 200,000 miles for that $2000 to pay for itself, whats the point.

Actually this is a forum for discussion about anything related to our 3rd gen Dodges. Group buys go elsewhere, but we can certainly discuss the merits of any piece of equipment here. Which is what we are doing.

I don't see anyone whining here bCrow except you. If you don't like the discussion don't read it. Besides sounding juvenile, I think you need to read up on TDRs policy on personal attacks.

I was just trying to put it in perspevtive for some people that may be thinking of buying this just alone for getting better milage, it isn't worth it for milage alone.

Just like putting in a gear splitter for less rpms at cruise, nice to have but takes along time to ever pay for itself.

When you think man I gained 2 mpg it does sound great, but when you actually put it into dollars it is like this

200,000 miles at 18mpg will cost you $18,888. 88 (using $1. 70/gal)

200,000 miles at 20mpg will cost you $20,000. 00 (using $1. 70/gal)

So you see you saved $1,888. 88

I used the same argument to a friend of mine when we went to CA. It is a 5000 mile round trip, I travel kinda fast and could gain about 2-3 mpg if I followed the speed limit. It would save me $200, but be around 10 hours more driving time. Personal that 10 hours is worth more then $200 to me, hammer down.

So it is all how you look at things and what is more important to you. I think if the lock out deal was less then $1000 I might think about it.

I'm in!

Randyn,

I'm in, I see a lot of guys trying to make dollars and sense out of this. It is nice to see a pay back, but most of us buy these things to make our trucks better/different/more to our liking.

Thanks for looking into this, and thanks for bringing it to the "front of the pack" now and again.

As a newbie, I haven't made it through all of the threads yet, and I'm glad I didn't miss this one.

milage

I just went from a 03 2x2 to a 04 4x4 the milage

went down by over 5 mpg I blame it all on the stupid hubs

here is a test ... try to push a 4x4 by hand on flat ground

then do the same on a 2x2 ... I had both trucks for a few

days and tried it  what a difference, only my

2 cents im to poor to say more... PS yup im in lets doo it

I agrre it is rediculous to have a chain in the t-case spinnning all the time. You will have to replace the chain at around 150k. This is on top of the front u-joints and front shaft u-joints and hub assembly bearings. Chrysler is losing sales to ford for not having a lockout. It only makes about . 5 to 1 mpg difference. But why have a 400k engine and a drive train that will need expensive service at 150k. I would be interested in one.

Their is alot more to it then just hubs turning. Just the weight of a 4x4 over the 2 wheeler alone, you have a front axle, trans case, and all related parts.

Also the truck sits higher and you have more stuff hanging under the truck which hurts your aero which has an effect also.

It would have been nice to have the option from the factory for lock outs, they could do it for about $200 -vrs- us spending $2000. It is an option they should add I think.

Hubs??

Just my penny's worth, starting in 73, GM had the famous all time four wheel drive, made by New Process, Which to my understanding, was owned by Chrysler, and used GM as a test bed. Later, the dodge rams used the same NP transfer cases, all time four wheel drive concept. I believe this transfer case is a carry over design. NOW, when I had my 74, I converted it to free hubs, Inexpensive hubs were $50. 00 and adapter that had to be installed in the transfer case was an other $150. 00 I did not notice any gain in mileage, and a little more maintenance because of the hubs etc. Convenient two wheel--yes-- more work to install and cost--?? your choice. why change if your getting 18 to 22 mpg now? AND times do change.

'74 full time

Even if the full time system is converted to part time with that adapter it still is turning everything in the system but the hubs freewheel .

No it is not, he is talking of the old NP203 full time case. They do make a kit to put in them, it disconects the front drive shaft just like the new NP208 and up stuff does. Only thing was when you did it in the old NP203's it effected the oiling in the case, had to make sure you put it in 4x4 every now on then to work the oil around.
