Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Growling coming from Air intake Filter

I can put up with all of the noises coming from the engine, injectors, pump, exhaust, and singing from the turbo but the growling/thumping noise that emits from the breather is annoying. I posted this on a different thread under a different title and got feed back anywhere from busted valves to valves need adjusting. I even stopped by the local dealer asked one of the techs about the noise. He said it was normal, you just don't notice it with the stock air box on. He explained it like this, as the turbo is spinning the blades will grab a scoop of air, and that is the sound you are hearing. You will notice it more depending on weather, temperature, humitidy, air density, etc ... made sense to be. Well anyway said it was nothing to be concerned about. Anybody else notice this sound? anyone have a remedy?

I heard it with the stock air box more than with the AFE, although the cheap plastic stud nuts came loose on my AFE housing, and the noise drove me nuts. Since then I have replaced the plastic crap with nomal people waskers and nuts. Now no more thumping, just a lot of air moving.

I installed the AFE stage I on my truck and was amazed at the lack of mounting nuts,washers etc in the kit. For what they charge for this setup you'd think the necessary hardware would be included. I am impressed with the quality and fit of the product though. My Tag I really quiets the whistle down but it still wakes the neighborhood up.

You may want to try a Turbo Air Guide (TAG). It will help the turbo to spool more quickly and many have commented on how much quieter the trucks run using open air intakes with a TAG installed.
