I would suggest getting power from the fuse block using and "Add-A-Circuit" and piggy backing onto a switched circuit. Since the gauge dosnt require many amps it can be protected by a 1 or 2 amp fuse and the base circuit can still have it's original power capacity and fuse. I used this method for my gauges(see signature). Hope this helps.
I tapped onto the panel light fuse so that the gauge lights dim when the panel lights intensity are changed.
You can get the power for the gauge lighting from the light in the cigarette lighter so it will dim with the rest of the instruments. The keyed on power can come from the cigarette lighter itself or piggy back at the fuse panel.
