2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Guage Mounting options

I just got guages for my new pickup and i bought a 3 pod A pillar mount along with it. Now i've been looking through the archives and it seems some people put the new pod over the old A pillar and some don't. I just wanted to ask to see what people have thought worked the best. Thanks

i just installed mine a couple days ago and the autometer triple pod i got from genos was designed to fit over the stock cover and wasn't big enough to take it's place completely

I mounted mine by itself. to mount it, the weather strip helps hold it, then at the inside top I fabricated a little angle bracket out of 18ga steel, pop riveted it to the "a" pillar, then put one screw into my bracket to hold the inside top of the gauge pod. Worked good, when I sold the old truck, I removed the gauges, and reinstalled the factory cover.

I orderd mine from Geno's and it installed over the top of my A-piller in my 97 fine.

Mine didn't cover well alone. I followed the directions and it works fine. I don't think I have enough wire slack though. Remember the fact that you need enough wire length to allow the guages to be pulled for bulb replacements. Mine came from Genos, its the Auto Meter brand.

I installed my by itself. I didn't like the looks of it over the factory one , looked cheap. Some brands are too thin and you have to mount over exsisting pillar.

I got mine from Geno's I just cut out the section of the stock one that had the clips and used double stick tape to attach them to the new one. Slid it on at pushed in the clips has held just fine for 3 years now. Painted it to match.

Note screw between top and middle gauge. Drill hole thru gauge pod mark pillar, center punch and (very important) use a short drill bit so you don't ding the pillar placing a dimple on the outside as the drill penetrates the last bit of metal. I did this (dimple) on another auto of mine. Oh yeah, you can paint the screw head once it's tightened up all the way.



I didn't like the idea of placing it over the stock one either - MHO.

Well, kind of.



My 99 has the Infinity speakers, which include the tweeter in the A cover. The guage pod definitely doesn't fit over that, but does include a space for the speaker. I bought a replacement A-pillar cover without the speaker (from Geno's when I bought my gauges) and drilled out large holes behind the gauges for wiring. Used the push pins to keep everything together.



I've had several people tell me that it looks like it came stock that way.

I just installed a dual pillar pod, Autometer gauge, and put it over the stock pillar. Mine looks great. I've left it black at this time, but will be painting as soon as I install my EGT gauge. The only thing that I don't like is that I couldn't keep the mounting bracket on the back of the gauge to hold the gauge firmly in...

I never put the mount bracket on either, if it is loose, wrap it with tape and that will give it a better friction fit. Mine were always tight and never give any problems.

The gauges fit tight in mine also. I actually had to sand the opening a bit to get the gauges in at all. I actually didn't want to install over the original A-pillar cover but couldn't think of a good way to attach the new panel (didn't think of the tape/bracket approach or making brackets). Biggest problems I had installing over the old panel were: the extremely tight fit between the double thickness of the A-pillar covers and the dash pinched the wires and hose going to the gauges and getting the holes in the original A-pillar cover in the correct place. Initially when I made the holes, the were to high up the A-pillar and caused a crimp in the wires as they went to the gauges.

When I did this I blocked off the ports at the fire wall to force the A/C to go to the other vents.

I lost the cup launcher and the 12V power plug.
