Gauges (and location) for racing

Okay, so I need to add a fuel pressure gauge to my standard three (which are in a triple dash pod), and was wondering if there are any others that you racers/ pullers would recommend.

I won't install anything I don't really need...

Also, what locations have you-all used, including interior vs. exterior, and what brands?

I love my analog Autometer Ultralights, and don't want digital.

I know we "competitive types" like to play things close to our chests ( ;) ), but I'm hoping ya'll, my peers, will give me your recommendations.

Thanks! :D

I put my fuel pressure gauge under the dash and use a red LED hooked up to an oil pressure swith that comes on at about 5-6psi. When my fuel pressure drops below 5psi the light comes on. That way I can watch the road and not the gauge. My LED has been comming on during very heavy acceleration and I then take a peek at the gauge. I think my primary fuel pump is getting week. I put two LEDs in my "A" pillar gauge pod. Hope this helps.

PS there is a picture in my reader rigs.

Well, Brandon, I had a boost loss issue last year, and when we ran a gauge on it, we found it was quite low on fuel pressure. We fixed the overflow valve and I got my boost back. It's better than guess-work, for sure! :)

Thanks Jon T; that little light is a good idea...

Rhonda,

Here's mine:

It works good there, as you don't need to look at it all the time. I have it coming off post-filter via a tapped banjo w/ an 1/8" inline needle-valve so I can shut if off if I ever develop a leak. This is because the fuel runs right to the back of the gauge, inside the cab. Before he left the TDR, Bill, aka illflem, convinced me that this would work, and mines been in for 14 months now w/o a drop of fuel leaking (knock on wood). The best part is that all my gauges match and people ask constantly why I need two boost gauges... this is when you get to tell them that you have twin turbos! :) LOL

I also installed one in Denis' pickup, but it was down under the dash next to where you hook up the scanner tool. The FP gauges don't need to be in a really easily readible spot, as you only look at them occasionally... hence why mine isn't angled towards me. I check it when I start up in the mornings, and also about once a week on a hard pull. W/ stock lines and pump, and my BOMBs I can easily pull my FP to 0-1 PSI. Usually on the hard pull I have a "co-pilot" along and let them read the FP gauge for me while I watch the road... all I need to know is what it's doing, as I can't change a thing about it anyway, why worry? Just like when racing and the pyro goes to 1600*... well, that's nice, but I gotta win, so maybe if I don't look at it, it'll go away! Am considering upgrading w/ Wildcat's kit, but might just save up and put on a FASS.

Just another option if you want to keep all the same gauges and don't wanna spend the $$$ for an electric one.

Rhonda. . did you look at the Rod's Pod that Scotty makes. . they sell 'em at Wildcat Diesel

I don't know where your dash mount is now so this may not work at all

Good input, guys. :) Couple of issues: NHRA has stict regulations for running fuel into the cab, and my truck must be legal. I like that location, Josh, but where you have yours is where my airbag switch is. Love the comment about EGT's! How often I've been there, but 1600 degrees? If only it stayed that low...

Zach, not a bad suggestion, but keep in mind I have a '98 now (happy, happy), and it looks as though they only make them for pre-'98 app's.

If I really only need that one extra gauge, I like both the bullet mount and gauge gizmo from Geno's since I don't currently have any in that area, and as Josh points out, I won't need to look at it all the time. I also like the idea of mounting just outside the windshield (so retro-race car! ).

Brandon, how much pressure do I want to run? As much as humanly possible, of course! Oo. Keep in mind that anything that can be done, can be over-done. :D

Oops forgot about that.

If you want it incab Dipricol has a new isolated system and the isolators seem to be living longer.

Diesel Dynamics has some isolated autometer gauges too.

Hey Mistah Fetcha, I've been layin' low and (if you can believe this) staying out of trouble!!

Thanks Zach, I'll look into those. How's school?

Brandon, no, just saw Piers while other stuff was being done one time, and MikeR another... Sometimes it can be fixed by stretching the spring, not necessarily replacing, but that's probably only good for short-term.

Triple pillar mount-0-100 boost, fuel presuure (electronic), 0-60 boost(boost to wastegate). TST PM3-digital-egt's, trans fluid temp in line to cooler anf boost.
