I know that gauges should be the first BOMB that goes on a truck, but I am in the market for a truck and not everyone believes that, so here is my question? I am looking at a 98 12V that has a #10 plate and injectors (the guy didn't know which ones  ) It has factory exhaust and no other mods. Should I be worried that he may have run too high of egt's or is it probably ok. He said he never pulled very much with it. It never even had a brake controller until recently.

I know you guys want more info on injectors, where the plate is placed, and so on but this is what I know. Any guidence would be appreciative.

Is it a 5-speed truck? 215 pump? If so, I would say that even with 300s and a #10, the EGT's would get pretty hot. If it has 370's or something, with the stock exhaust, then I would guess it has more than likely gotten hot. Does the guy let run at all after stopping to cool the turbo? Was the plate installed by a shop, or by him? With my #11, stock 215 injectors, and a walker muffler, I can reach my egt limit empty if I run it hard through all 4 gears (not counting first). With even a slight load, it is pretty easy to get it hot if you dont watch it. Yet, if you do pay attention, i can also tow pretty heavy without it getting hot. I guess it all depends on how he drove the truck. When I got my truck, I didnt get to talk to the owner, but it had an EGT gauge. It had a mark on it at 350*, so I assume he shut er' down at 350*, not 300*. But everything has been good so far with mine. :)

It is a 5spd truck and he was told that it should have about 330hp and 700+ hp if that will give you an idea of what kind of injectors it may have. I doubt he knows much about letting it cool down first. I asked him about the KDP and he had no idea what I was talking about, and he has 3 12V trucks?

All in all is it something to stray away from? The price seems right at this point, but he is 355 miles away. Hoping to go look at it the beginning of next week.

If it has the 215 pump (96-98 5-speed), a #10 plate alone with get you 330hp and 750lbft with no injectors at all. Maybe it has no injectors, and he was fed a line?? Use your best judgement as to whether or not it is worth it. Just go with your gut feeling.

I think I'd stray away from that one, unless he makes a better impression of knowing what he's talking about when ya go see the truck.

Just my . 02

I would be very concerned about a #10 plate with 5 speed used for pulling without gauges. And especially if the owner/driver knows nothing about the engine.

Stock clutch and #10 plate

If he still has a stock clutch, I'm not sure that it would hold >700 lb-ft of torque. My 97 slipped with a #11 plate (680 lb-ft) at peak torque without trying hard at all. If he says that he's running that much torque on a stock clutch maybe he doesn't know what plate is in his pump. Just my 0. 02 worth. Ken Irwin

He said that it has a heavy duty clutch in it already. But he didn't know what kind? I am going to call him back today and ask him some more questions before I make the trek. Hopefully he can get some paper work or info from the original owner on what was done to the truck (kind of injectors, brand of clutch, etc)

I talked to the guy again and he said that the plate was installed by him. The largest load he pulled was approx 8000lbs and other wise it is his daily driver, 75 miles one way. He also said that he has paper work for the new clutch that was installed. The truck is strait piped and uses standard paper filters for air filters. He explained his driving as Lax (although everyone's opinion of that may be different). He said smoke is not excessive out the tail pipe, but again opinion.

If I haven't already stated the truck is a 98 ext. cab short box sport, 12V 5spd, in MN. 110,000 mi. on the truck

I told him I would tell him by tonight if I am going to make the trek to go see it or not. I have some pictures and he is sending me more, with the vin to check on Carfax.

that is probably the only problem with buying a truck with bomb's is how much beating has this thing seen. Good luck Tj

wow, a pretty rare truck. I'd say if it is what you are lookin for, go for it if it feels right. It might be wothwile to meet the guy. once you talk to him in person, you may not hesitate on buying it at all.
