Guess That Noise!

A disturbing noise has developed in the rear of my '05. Occurs randomly (not every time) at speeds of 10 mph or less so far. Appears to be getting more frequent. Sounds like a wore out drum type brake shoe with rivets digging into the brake drum. It is not a squeak and it is not a brake shoe or pad. Applying brakes or park brake has no effect on the noise. It is either a u-joint, carrier bearing, or bearing in the rear end. The truck is in the shop now awaiting diagnosis.



Take a guess at what is broke!

I would guess the U joint. Have you had it checked? I have had past experiences with the noise issue. It happened to be the exhaust. Let us know what you find out.

Shop called this morning and they cannot get it to make the noise and have not found anything yet. I have to go drive it this afternoon to see if I can get it to make the noise... . I hate stuff like this. More to come!



Also, the pinion seal appears to be seaping a little, but the oil level in the pumpkin is ok.

Update: Went and drove it with the mechanic and got it to make the noise!!! Yeah!!! The mechanic heard the noise too, so that means it is not just in my head. He said that it was not the noise he was expecting to hear; he said he was expecting a squeak... squeak... squeak. Still at the shop for further examining to determine the problem. I will let you know as I hear more.

I have been going through the same drill as you chasing noises. It was driving me nuts as I could hear it but no one else could. After 3 round trips from Alaska to Az. it has been solved but only by beating it to death with money. Two Dodge dealers test drove it with me driving and them driving. Nothing found. Took it to a local mech. hear in Casa Grande, Az. He and I drove around for at least 5 hrs. over 3 days. Nothing found but noise there.

Finally... ... ... replaced the clutch, throw out bearing, pilot bearing, carrier bearing, all u-joints, motor mounts and transmission mount. Split the x-fer case from transmission but nothing found. Refilled with new fluids (overfill the NV5600). Finally the noise is gone along with $2600 but it was worth it to me. That also included new front brake pads. Tues it is going in for new front axle shaft u-joints as it has a slight wobble in the steering on turns only. Hopefully it will be good to go another 120k.

Ok. Picked the truck up Friday. They think they found the noise but to be honest are not sure. The right rear brake caliper was sticking. We made the decision to replace both rear brake calipers and see if that is the issue. Put just over 200 miles on it this weekend and there was no noise. I will drive it this week before I am positive that this was the issue. I have to say that with good pads, I did not expect this noise from a sticking brake caliper.



Also went ahead and put new pads on the rear since all of them were down to 20%. I could have waited, but the labor was going to be done anyway so it made financial since to go ahead with new pads now instead of waiting. I will update one more time around the first of next week to let everyone know the final results.

Glad to hear that you may have found your noise problem Much cheaper than my solution. Today I had new front axle U-Jts and all new ball joints installed and front end alignment checked. Also had the vibration damper checked... ... . it was ok. Hopefully I am done investing $$$$ into my truck. I also love to drive it long distances.
