8-way power seat...

12V engine noise reduction efforts...

I was coming back from Dupont today after putting a deposit on a new ATV and pulled off a Scottsburg to fill up on fuel at the Citco $1. 10 and a black 4x4 quadcab pulled in behind me with 2 State Troopers in it. They both got out and started talking to me about my truck and I started asking the one about his and he says it ain't mine it's the States. The 2 officers gave me a short tour of the truck and to my surprise it had a radar, 2way radio computer terminal, and all the other Police goodys in it. I asked if it was turned up and they both just smiled and opened the hood:eek: That thing had twins on it and a BHAF(sort of) it looked awsome to see 2 chargers under the hood. They said that they could out run any other patrol car that they had except the camaros. The one said the fastest he's had it is 158mph and had plenty of throttle left, when he chased down a speeding mustang. :) So if you're ever in Indiana and find yourself on I-65 around Scottsburg and Columbus look out for a black 2500 with dark tinted windows and State tags because it ain't your normal truck and if you start to play with it it's going to make you look bad then give you a ticket.

source?

I wonder if it was something confiscated in a drug deal??? I can't see the state going to that much work to have a sleeper trooper vehicle. Ray

The State Patrol in Washington State uses some CTD Rams. They are black and white with a canopy. They carry portable scales in the back, looking for overweight semis.

158mph with throttle left... . right. I guess it had some 3. 07's under it and at least a gear vendors. They should take it to the Salt Flats and confirm their speed record in a diesel pickup. That truck would have to have close to 800 HP and all kinds of trick goodies to keep it together... much less an everday driver chasing down bad guys. I suppose it was lowered with some speed rated rubber on it as well. They run the good stuff on the squad cars. If the tires are not on it they will not let it run that fast. I can't imagine what would be being said over here if somebody posted this on the Ford site. Sorry, I DO NOT buy this one at all... CJ

Humboldt County, CA has some CTD rigs. Some 12 valves and lately I've seen a few 24 valves. It looks like they traded most of their 12 valves in. Probably have six or eight total. At least one PSD. They have the lights and all that business plus a winch and high lift jack on the front mounted on one of the popular aftermarket front bumpers, Reinel (sp?) I think. I don't think they are very fast. Mostly for patrolling all the back country we have around here. A lot of steep dirt logging roads.

CJ, Cummins horses are much stronger and faster than International horses.

Nobody said it wasn't downhill a bit or with a tailwind or both. Do I see some horse envy going on? :)

Power Wagon,

If you guys think Law Enforcement is tooling around in a twin turboed 4X4 CTD running 158 mph with pedal left... with or without a tailwind, a hill or any other advantage you can think of, I am absolutely lost for words. DO the math. A stocker with 3. 54's runs out of rpm at 115mph. You guys are talking 40% more gear to even get close to that. You can't do that with 3. 07's and a overdrive unit installed... . neither of which this truck had. That truck will not hit 158mph if one dropped it from 10K feet... which is likely how this story came about... . CJ

The LAST thing cops need are hotrod diesel pickups... they also don't need Camaros or Mustangs. Hell, in my opinion, they should lose the Crown Vics and Caprices and all drive Malibus or Cavaliers to save fuel.

All departments that I've ever heard of don't deal with high speed chases, so what do they need the power for? It's not like they actually do anything besides write tickets to pad their jurisdiction's budget anyway...

Rob

(yes, you guessed it, I have a VERY low opinion of cops)

Maybe this truck had twin turbos. Now I don't believe it will do 158 mph. He said he saw the turbos and was told it would do 158 mph. Two different things.

If all you guys that don't like cops who enforce speed limits and other road laws, come to Austin. You can do just about anything you want to and get away with it. Get's old really freaking fast. I want more enforcement here.

Also, I think highway troopers do need hot rod cars (camaros).

I don't know what bad experience some of you have had, I've had some to deal with some butt-head cops before myself, but there are people like that in every profession. Most of these guys have a lot more dangerous and stressful jobs than us. I would like to thank the cops out there for doing a job I probably could'nt handle.

Sorry, but I had to do a little venting.

Brian

RobG,

To counter Rob I will say that most of the cops I know never write tickets. Two are homicide detectives which deal with stuff most of us would never even dream of seeing... much less want to. One works in vice... which breaks up a ton of marriages. One works as a missing persons Sergeant who gets to hunt all the Alzheimer walkoffs, and abductions all over Dallas. The other is a Traffic Investigative Sergeant who deals with serious or fatal accidents all day long. The city of Dallas spends little time or effort writing tickets unless it is a flagrant infraction which takes place right under their nose. They do receive grant money from the Gov. to enforce DWI's and seatbelt infractions. This is done as OT by the officers. The State agencies tend to set up and write tickets to those who flagrantly break the law. The one's who receive these tickets usually vent about it somewhere along the way..... CJ

I agree with Brian, cops do a good service for all of us. If you are doing what you should be doing you will not get a ticket 999 out of 1000 times. To take it out on cops is silly when you were doing something that is against the law. If you disagree with the law take it out on the law, leave the cops out of it.

As fas as having a twin turbo CTD for a patrol car, SWEET!!! What other vehicle could they have that will go anywhere, catch speeding bad guys, and get 18 MPG or better when cruising? How about a patrol car that will last 300K with a few repairs and normal maintenance?

158? Nah, but 135 is easily achieveable trust me. Tires rated for 115 or better that make 135 possible? Nope. Tell me that you have never gone over the speed rating on your tires. It happens all the time and we have ALL done it. Good story, I would love to see it.

Have I exceeded my tires speed recommendations... yes. Does a State owned vehicle used by law enforcement?... . I would BET not. The liability alone keeps speed rated tires on all squad cars. It makes no sense for any agency to be BOMBING a CTD and patrolling the highway in it at 158mph writing tickets. The thought of it is ridiculous. 135mph in a CTD would take different gears and tires. 3. 54's and 285's isn't going to get you there. My truck with 3. 54's and 265/75's hits the engine governor at 115-117. It is still pulling hard, but has done run out of gear. 285's would get to around 120-122..... CJ

I would love to see it as well. Maybe a writeup in a magazine. If I was tooling around in this thing everybody I knew would know about it... . maybe they were sworn to secrecy... . CJ

CJ,

I suspect the cops were pulling his leg a bit. Cops I know are bad about that sort of thing. Just laugh when you catch them at it. The truck may be fast, but not that fast. A CHP lived next door to me in the '70s. You should have heard the stories he would tell about the '69 Dodge patrol cars. They were fast, but I really don't think they were as fast as he claimed.

As far as cops go I support them and really believe they do a tough dangerous job. The last time I got a ticket (in the Green Monster naturally) the guy was polite about it, but he had me red handed (maybe lead footed) so I was a dead duck. He didn't evem mention the smoke cloud he had to drive thru. :D:D
