Backpressure gauge question

o rings vs fire rings

bmoeller, you said that it kept the oil clearer, longer before you turned the fuel up. What about now?

Reason I ask is I've been changing the tp at 2k miles and the oil isn't that clean. It's not black and sticky at 5k miles, more of a really dark dark brown or light black (is that possible?) you can't see through it and it sure doesn't look like Gary's. On the previous oil change I was changing tp at 500 miles trying to keep it clean with no luck.

I've started to question how well my Frantz works, but I do realize that my mildly turned up truck will load the oil with more carbon, hense more black than a stocker and my results may be normal.

i emailed gulf coast filter and they said their replacement filter for the 0-1 model is $12. 50, about the same as Oilguard. :D

I suspect part of the reason Gary's oil is clener, is that he has a newer truck with fewer miles. Mine has almost 188k. on the clock.

I change tp at about the same interval as you. The oil is still plenty dark. Not as black as my 6. 9L diesel gets. Also, the 370 injectors aren't exactly clean burning. I can roll the smoke at will, when I want to, but I can control it fairly well. The spray pattern/angle isn't quite what it ought to be for the shape of the piston bowls in our engines, since they were meant for the marine engines. When I only had the #10 plate installed, the Frantz was still able to somewhat maintain oil clarity.

If you want to see how well the filter works, install a needle valve on the supply line to the filter when you change the oil. Do an oil analysis on that oil when you chage it again. Do it again, this time with the valve open, and compare. That is the only way to know whether it is doing what you think it is.

You can also tell if the tp needs changed, by touching the Frantz filter on a hot engine. The filter cover isn't as hot as it is when the tp is new (less oil flow).
