Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting .308 Builds

Memorial Day

After our last outdoor trip I need some kind of light for night time visitors. I dont want to install one on the rail on top the barrel because I would like to see what im going to shoot. I need something that can be mounted under the rifle and removed to be able to stow rifle in mule mounted scabbard. Its kind of creepy walking around in the dark holding a flashlight and thinking that if I need to shoot this rifle its going to be one handed. Because the Marlin in 45/70 with the Garrett 540 gr Hammerhead's is most DEFFENITLEY a two handed gun. Late night dinners and no street lights doesn't help any either. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hey BIG!!

Headed out to a Friends this AM. However I had a few minutes whilst stuffin my neck:-laf!
If you still have that scout rail attached to your Marlin? A Piccatinny offset adaptor would be one way to mount the light. Finding the right one? That would take a search. However, just like a scope, it will not be a smooth fit into a scabbard.
The other issue is recoil :-laf! and the integrity of the mount. Most of these things are made for AR platform rifles and shotguns. Not "shoulder mounted,:-laf crew served cannerns"!:-laf:DOo. I'll look more this evening, when I get home.
Maybe someone else has some ideas?
Talk at ya later!

Lights like Surefires, while expensive, are types to look into. Some of these micro light put out over 200 lumens. That's bright! As mentioned, if you have a rail, mounting should be fairly simple.

Figure out how youre going to mount it before buying the light. Might save you a few bux that way.

Having said that, I have a few Streamlights. Theyre an somewhat unusuial diameter, that's why I suggested the above.

Might be best to stick to the surefires. IIRC theyre a more available diameter to work with.

My hope was to keep a streamline profile on the rifle so as not to interfere with the daytime use in a scabbard and not cause a snag in-case of the need of fast withdrawal. I was looking at Midway USA and this could be a answer. But the question on RECOIL is a VERY BIG ONE. I could remove it and replace it as needed. I took a close to but not trying to hit shot at a cat that was looking at my mules like a kid in a candy store just to make sure it knew that it wasn't the only predator in town and what ever I use will have to stand up to allot. Never did see the cat again either. FIL said that the log that I hit made it so we wouldn't have to chop firewood that night. :-laf That was my next question, about the brightness of flashlights. Thanks

I'm not an expert on lighting, but it would seem that an LED light would be more shock resistant than one with a more traditional bulb. I have a few lights from Costco that are VERY bright, painfully so, but I have no idea how they'd stand up to the stout recoil of a 45-70. The only tactical firearm that I can think that folks would use lights on consistently that would have anywhere near that recoil would be a short barrel shotgun. That is a big recoil, but it's more of a big shove than a whack.

Mr Mink

I dont think that there would be enough room for that between the tubes but in the AM I will take a look I do like the looks of that one vs the one that I found they mount the same way. Right now im still a bit lazy from our outing and resting up to do it again for another organization to help out. I have to get all the outside time I can so the winters wont seem so long away from the mountains.

I think that the flashlights of today are better than anything I have to use now!!! I believe that the LED type would be better because of the low power consumption I have no idea about their tolerance for abuse and I sure that the manufacture would call mounting one to a cannon barrel ABUSE IN THE HIGHEST FROM

KB sometimes the simplest is the best idea isn't it duck tape to the rescue. Its not like I want to permanently mount it and duck tape is cheap.

Check the links to the flashlights on the site that I posted previously. I looked at them after I posted it. I hadn't heard of that product until I was poking around on the internet tonight. Those lights look bullet proof. There's a video of them pounding nails through 2 2x4's. I think it said the lens is 1/4 or 1/2 thick. You probably pay for it, but if you're betting your life on seeing what's after you, it's probably worth it!

Thanks ill do that and your rite when it comes to my guns weapons firearms what ever you want to call them the wife is a pretty good sport about the cost. our a** is on the line

I know the T4 Inova light I have has a lifetime warr and I've got about $200. 00 in it but I also have extra battery and 12 volt n 110 charger with it

Before our trip I was thinking about a rechargeable light but where do you charge it in the mountains. The guy from Ca has a pretty neat solar panel that he charged his laptop, flashlight, ipod, and a bunch of other tech y things that I didn't know what they were. Some kind of meter and blood analyzer deal. It charged them up pretty fast. He is going to send the info for it. So the rechargeable is not out of the question.

Hey Big I'm not sure how long your out at a time but each battery has like 3 to 6 hr's run time and let me tell you on bright it will blind ya really fast plus it has a strobe also

Trust me when I hear something in the woods and its dark im not out investigating all that long. I put bells on the gang and the always present camp dog will let you know if something is around. So the light would not be on that long. But it sure would be nice to recharge if need be. The wife has a problem with understanding POWER CONSERVATION :-laf

SOLD Thanks a bunch that's exactly what is needed will get on line as soon as I stop yelling and screaming enough to get one on line with credit card in hand, And my blood pressure will drop in camp using it. Thanks again. And if those stock blanks are some kind of Kevlar or anything other than wood another prod that im buying. We had rain for what seemed like 40 days and 40 nites and the wood stock bothers me. (in reality it didn't rain that much but enough to soak me to the bone) Just looked on the site more the stocks for 595 bucks SOLD it may KICK MY A** BUT AT LEAST THEY WONT BE A SPONGE. NOW CAN YOU HELP ME OUT ON THE WINNING LOTTO NUMBERS??????
