The only option I have not seen mentioned here yet is an ankle holster. I have never used a real ankle holster, but I have used a boot-top holster with a metal clip. It takes a really small gun. My reading leads me to believe that ankle holsters are generally pretty uncomfortable, but the gun would be reasonably accessible while you are seated behind the wheel. The gun would also leave the truck when you do, just in case.
Where legal, I have been known to stuff a semi-auto between the seat cushions to the driver's right. If you leave the butt sticking out a reasonable amount you can pull the pistol out okay, but the angle is uncomfortable.
Regarding laws, you must check every locale. Is some states, like California, the laws are the same throughout the state, but in other states, like Illinois, local jurisdictions pass very restrictive laws. Morton Grove, IL, does not allow possession of a handgun, but they are legal in most of Illinois (not, however, to carry loaded in a truck). Indiana recognizes carry permits from any states that recognize Indiana's permit. To my knowledge, this means Kentucky.
The bottom line seems to be that you will be breaking the law in most places if you are carrying a loaded firearm anywhere in your vehicle, and especially if it's a handgun and is within your reach. Only you can decide if you would rather be with it or without it.
I, for one, will never find you guilty of CARRYING it. Be careful how you use it, though, if I'm on the jury.
