Whatever you do, don't try to "sneak" a gun into Canada. My son was driving from Oregon to our home in Alaska some years ago and at the time, you just had to declare long guns - no paperwork, no fee. He told them he had a shotgun, but didn't mention the . 22 he was also carrying. They searched his truck, found the . 22, and then told him they were confiscating both guns and his truck. If he wanted them back, the fine was $300 and "yes, we do accept credit cards. " He learned his lesson well! We drive "the Highway" quite often and have never had a problem, but I leave the guns at home.

Driving thru Canada = free

having your truck confiscated = 300. 00

getting your truck back = priceless

In 54 trips over the Alaska Hyw. we have never had one problem crossing the USA-Canada border in either direction.

Just be pleasant to them, answer their questions and don't tell them more than they asked for. Thet do not want to BS with you. This is their business so treat it that way.

I had a shot gun on one trip about 20 years ago and it has caused them to question me about it ever since then. I carry no guns since and have never needed one.

Also we have had the same results in 6 trips into Mexico at the USA-Mexico border. ;)

Firearms app.

I downloaded the form to take a firearm into Canada and I can send it to you in PDF format. I understand that you do not sign the form until you are asked to at the border. I will travel in my firth wheel with a 12 ga. auto. A pump shotgbun is good too but intruders run when they hear the slide being worked:) Don't leave home without it.

As I live in Alaska and travel out in October and back in March here is what I found a couple of months ago. It used to be $50. 00 Canadian for a 60 day renewable up to one year permit. Last year they changed for the benefit of U. S hunters to $25 Canadian for a 60 day permit not renewable. If you are over the 60 days you have to get a new permit for another 60 days to go through canada again. In the earlier part of this a member gave the canadian website and phone numbers to get info. Go to the website and down load the form for the permit and fill it out at home but only do 1 copy not the 3 they tell you as the customs person does not want to fill out 3 pieces of paper and will run it through the copier. If you are going to be over 60 days make out 2 and save your self the trouble so you wont have to do it later. Most of the time they will put the fee on your credit card but I have run into a time or two where they would only take cash. I always carry at least a $100( also exact bills as they did not make change) of canadian money easily gotten from your local bank before you leave on your trip for incidentals such as this. The customs people will not do a conversion on the money and you will be caught short on the exchange. Answer politely and take off your sun glasses to talk to them. Read the rules carefully on the weapons on what is legal. When I went through I had the pistol grip on my Mossburg 500 and it met all the rules and regulations but coming back through North Dakota a customs agent interpated the rules in his way and said the short stock was illegal and was going to confiscate my shotgun and I explained to him that this was the way it came through canada from Alaska and was approved by a previous customs agent. What was finally done, I said I could reinstall the shoulder stock which was in the truck and after he pouted and stuck out his lower lip for a while it was agreed upon. Again, I was legal but he had his own version of the rules. Carry Canadian money for trivial things but your credit card is best for most things and the credit card will do the conversion for a fee on your monthly statement.
