Couple of cat questions. What is accually inside the cat? I keep seeing the terms gutted cat, How do you gut the cat, What years had cats? Thanks Otis

Otis, Don't gut the cat. Just get a cat test pipe. Those cats are expensive. When I had mine off for a short while I looked inside to find what looked like a screen mesh and amazingly you could see some light through the the thing. I put mine back on because the drone at highway speeds was too much for me. You could probably sell the cat for way more than a test pipe costs anyway. Just my 2 cents.

There's a honeycomb material in it, brittle stuff. I removed mine & put in the test pipe. Then the state enacted inspections. :{ I stood the cat on end, grabbed a bfh & a 2' long rod & started pounding. Took awhile, but cleaned it out. It's back on. :-laf

It's best to tie the front legs together, hang by the rear legs from a tree, and make sure your knife is real sharp. :D Stop by your local Chinese restaurant for more a more detailed demo. :-laf

Don't wreck your cat. Just take it off, stick it in a corner of your garage, and put in a straight or test pipe with clamps. When smog tests come to your town, and eventually they will, spend 10 minutes and stick it back on for the test.

Gutting a cat is easy.

First, you tempt him over with some tuna. The smell really attracts cats.

Then, you quickly grab his little neck and string him up.

Once he's out of his misery, just start at the throat and work your way down.

FYI: the market for catgut instrument strings (like violin, etc) has shrunk as the market shifts towards synthetic substitutes for catgut.

If you're considering cat gutting as a side business, you may wish to survey the market first. Are there any other cat gutters nearby that would compete? How can you convince stringmakers that your cat's guts are of superior quality??

Something to consider. .

Boy there are some sick puppies on here :-laf :-laf :-laf

But seriously, you don't indicate what state your in, so beware. Here in liberal California a peek under your truck by any law enforcement officer (usually a chippie) will cost you 10 grand :--) Don't do it... ... ... . :-{}

Perhaps I should brake this down a little . I will be doing commercial hauling in 48 states. I need as much milage as I can get and still have the cat on the truck when the inspectors at the scales look at it. I m not concerned with how it sounds. I need to know if it gives you a NOTICABLE difference in power or MPG. The truck is a 98 5 speed, stock everything now . plan on putting an adjustable power chip of some kind but nothing extreme. Thanks Otis

:-laf :D Sad but true!

Don't worry about it then Otis. You don't have a Cat on your truck. They started puting them on the 2004 and up model years. Your O. K.

Otis... 98. 5 didn't have a cat, what you're looking at is a resonator. . the 98 12V's had cats. I'm pretty sure of this, somewhere on this site is a rundown on which years had them.

Yep it's a resonator, you are good to go!

So the 98 12 V s had a cat but the 24 didnt? now the new 04-05s have cats. whats that all about. ?? Did the older 24 run clean enough to not need a cat but somehow the 04-05s need one?

24V were clean enought at the time. Standards got tighter with the newer models. That's why they are back on now.

After running cat-less for 2 days now I have some impressions. The sound under throttle is definately louder. At cruise, it's just barely louder than with the MBRP + cat. With the TC locked at low RPMs, it sounds very much like a 12v but not as loud. As for the cat... . BIG restriction... I'll post a pic of the inside but with a bright flashlight, very little light gets through. Having gutted cats before I was surprised at the size of the honeycomb catalyst... quite small for 5. 9 pushing 30+ lbs of boost. I was most surprised by the fuel mileage. While a bit early to say for sure, it appears that fuel mileage went up 0. 7-1. 0 mpg on a routine route.
