Price the cat before you gut it!!!

I would not gut the cat, I understand them to be very expensive to replace if you ever have to. You may consider setting it up to clamp a "test" pipe in that you could change out once a year for smog checks. Luckily we don't have that issue here. Yet?!!!!?

just install a new exh system. like a 4'' or 5'' no muffler just stright pipe. on my truck i have a 4'' down pipe to 5'' out the back looks stock except for the 6'' turn back to smoke out tail gaters. i put it on to direct the smoke behind the truck more. felt sorry for the cars in the right lane it use to smoke out the wrong person all fixed now. the only thing i did was loose the muffler it had a bad drone at 65 in the cab that would drive me crazy. now it is a little loud at lower speeds. but cruse is much better. wide open it is awesome.

Here in Maryland it is inevitable that we will eventually have inspections on our diesels. It has been creeping up slowly. I need to desperately lower some EGT's and would like the unit to at least look stock. When Maryland does begin to inspect diesels, they'll be as anal as CA. (Currently cars are physically inspected then dyno'ed at special facilities.



Cost is also prohibitive for me now to buy a new system with the other things that I need to do. (Exhaust Brake, torque lock up kit. . . )



I was looking at this as an easy quick fix to help lower EGT's until I can buy a new 4 " system.

Not sure what size pipe you have now, I think the stock input side of the cat is 3. 5" and the outlet is 4" which would require a reducer ahead of the cat. Welding the cat and pipe with your oxy/aceteline is easy. The cat is tapered toward the inlet, just cut it at the point where it matches the 4" pipe you are going to put through it. Might be a convenient time to add 4" down pipe, then you wouldn't need a reducer and you would end up with a nice smooth system. Don't forget to wear a high quality respirator when working on that nasty thing.
