Guys running w/ stacks...

What did you do in the bed of the truck where the pipe comes up through. If you have a DC bed liner, do you have to remove it? What if you have a Rhino, or other brand spray in liner? Is there also a lot of heat around the stacks?

I have a Line-X liner and just cut a hole through it and the sheet metal with the 4. 5" hole saw. The heat is not bad although they do get too hot to touch and wouldn't want them up against an in-bed fuel tank. One of those plastic grocery bags blew in and partially melted to the pipe just past the Y as it comes through the bed.

I have the DC bed liner, I just cut an addtional 1" of liner around the stack hole, and no problems.

My stacks have been on for over a year now and have not melted my tarp. Look at the pix's in this link and you can see how close the tarp is to the stacks.

Why do you use flex pipe?? And why so many band clamps??



I was gonna go 5" from the turbo and up thru the bed with all rigid pipe. And I wanna weld all joints, except for one under the cab which will have a band clamp, and at the stacks.



Cliff, what did your set up cost, and where did you get everything?



Where can I get a 5" down pipe, or do I have to buy a 4" and change it to 5" under the cab?

I have read everything out there,and there is no explanation for using the flex pipe! That is what I am curious about. I guess it is just personal preference, and easier to work with



Is there a boot or bushing to put between the pipe and the bed where it comes up thru?? I want to make a really clean install.

The reason for the flex-pipe is that the exhaust is rigid mounted on both ends (turbo and bed), the engine twists with the torque applied, therfore the flex-pipe is added to take up the movement. If you didn't use the flex-pipe, the exhaust will crack and break.

You dont have flex-pipe on the stock exhaust, because it's rubber mounted from the turbo back, and allows for movement.

Instead of flex pipe, I used an Epiflex connector that has even more flexibility than flex pipe and helped the resonance a lot.

Unless your running BIG HP

I think 4" pipe is going to work and will be a little cheeper.

The clamps make it EZ to adjust all the pipes so your stacks look the way you want them to, the band clamps don't crimp the pipes so you can adjust them.

At about $425 for the 4" to 5" setup I have on.

Rob is right on about the flex pipe.

Another fact about flex pipe. It is not designed to make bends. Flex pipe should be kept straight. Use elbows to make bends. This is straight from the Donaldson and Nelson exhaust catalogs.
