A buddy of mine (non-member) and I were running down the freeway about two weeks ago when a red 4-door long bed dually (could have been 4x4, I didn't pay that much attention) GMC D-Max came by us at a pretty good clip. My buddy was driving and decided to chase after it and see how it ran. The truck we had was an '00 auto quad cab short bed w/ 275's and a boost module. The GMC was faster than us up to the point that he must have hit some kind of speed limiter (about 95mph) where it just stopped accelerating. It wasn't majorly faster, but it was faster from about 70 on up till it ran out of steam.

It really surprised me that the D-Max was faster considering that the truck had to weigh quite a bit more than the one we were in, even though I know our truck was just a "Baby BOMBer". Any thoughts on what it takes BOMB wise to beat these things on the road?

Thanks all,

Mike

Don't be too sure taht it weighed more. The metal on teh new GM's are THIN. we have one at work and when I stand in the bed, it flexes a lot. I don't know wwhat they weigh but they FEEL cheesy.

Sure it does!! :D I had a run in with one by Crater Lake last weekend I went to pass him and he stomped on it (real safe) but it was a long straight away and no cars comming. I passed him fairly quick and even let off a bit to get side by side, we were doing well over 100. Then we pulled in to the camp ground and he seen my gauges and asked me what i have under the hood and I just said a "cummins" :p

I didn't know TDR added a silly question forum?

Just kidding, of course it's important!

Not sure what the "minimum" configuration is to outrun one, but with the BOMBs in my signature, haven't found one yet (DM or PSD) that could hang with me :D Now, before I come off sounding too cocky, I know that either one could be modified to do it, but they're pretty scarce... ;)

I went 1v1 against a Duramax a few weeks ago. From 70 mph I would jump him by about ¾ of a truck length and from 80 on up he pulled me by about 3-4 truck lengths; I was starting to de-fuel at around 2250 RPM or I think I would have kept in front of him till we both topped out at around 95-97’ish. We slowed down to 60 and went at it again…. this time I jumped him by about 3-4 truck lengths until I backed off to see if he was having a problem, once he caught up (80 again) I couldn’t keep up. Finally we slowed down to 50 a went at it again: This time I didn’t let up and the Cummins really pulled her heart out compared to the Duramax, 7-8 truck lengths. (You just got to love that LOW end Torque of our little B's!)

In conclusion, I know where my 95 auto std. Cab stands against the D/A combo…. . I like where I am at: I usually don’t tow much above 80! I forgot to mention my little B has 200K on her with the help of a TST 210/550 plate (pushed forward) and a home built 4” exhaust; Believe it or not I still have the stock torque converter? I think the GM’s with the D/A are nice, but for the price I’ll keep my Dodge a little bit longer. It’s nice to know that she can hang with the newest stuff out there, and do it fairly well!

The D/A was ext cab short bed 4x4. I figure I weighed more because I had the transfer tank filled with about 60 gallons??? I weighed about 6900-7000lbs.

They are quick because they are light... A CC 4x4 weighs in at about 6,000 lbs... My 2WD QC 4x2 SB wieghs 6,850...

Hitch up a load to the DMax and it will slow down considerably... They are real dogs with a load.

I saw my first D-Max yesterday. It was a black dually 4x4 and it was towing a car on a flatbed trailer. I was driving the Ford that was given to me while my truck was in the shop and it was raining like it was ark building time. I did not like the looks of the truck from the front. Most 4x4's that I've seen usually sit level, unlike 4x2's which sit higher in the rear. This D-Max, even with the load on it, sat up high in the back and low in the front. On a 4x4 it just didn't look right. Other than that aesthetic critique, I do like the body style on the Chevy trucks. I wouldn't own one, but they aren't bad looking.

A mechanical contractor I do a lot of work for has a CREWCAB 4X4 DRW with an Allison. He can not keep up with with either one of the trucks listed below. He pulls the Cummins for about a second off the line then it just eats him up. The PSD with the auto just blows his doors off... at least 6 lengths by 80 mph. He has some kind of chip now but it has his transmission going nuts. I havn't talked to him in a few weeks so I don't know if they got it figured out. He wants a rematch when the problems are resolved..... I'm game... . CJ

Rob,

I don't think the guy is real happy with the truck. He will never admit it or buy anything other than a GMC. His wife works at the GMC Assembly plant here in Arlington so it is kind of hard to beat the price. He tows a 20' Runabout on the weekends that is probably close to 5K lbs including the trailer. He has what he calls "plenty" of power, but that is subject to our own interpretation. Stock to stock I know he could outrun either of my trucks... but they don't run stock. He's a great guy, just has to wear those stupid blinders when he truck shops... CJ

John,

From a dead stop the PSD will pull the Cummins by about 2 lengths to 100mph. From a rolling start above 40 they run neck and neck with the Cummins having maybe an ever so slight advantage. The PSD has the propane and the auto, the Cummins has a significant weight advantage and the ability to blow a ton of black smoke on demand. The PSD hardly smokes at all. I really don't have a preference unless the family is along for the ride. We take the 4 doors for that... or the wifes "modified" Suburban. The Cummins is used for work... about 60K miles a year. ... CJ

On a 4x4 it just didn't look right.

I agree. . I love the look of the dodge's and fords they both make a beautyfull dually and 4x4, The chevy's for some ungodly reason are butt f***en ugly ,never have liked there looks and never will.

just my 2 cents worth:D :D

Thanks so much for the excellent response!

I figured your Ford PSD was pretty "stout"!

When you run the Dodge from a dead stop

do you have to use the propane to get the

(2) truck lengths?

Thanks again!

My pennies:

I am a mopar nut, but COBRAJET's PSD is about dead right. I'd love to see that think just blow away anything. Nice trucks COBRAJET, it is great to see trucks that are fast, and not to hear a lot of chatter, like my favorite, "It's a diesel, it can idle forever :D"

Bomb on folks!
