Had Gasket Sealant OR Not?

Been gone for a little while in ALASKA for work.

Now its time to get back to FUN THINGS while gone some parts arrived for the rebuild of a tractor motor. Talking with a wrench about head gasket installation he said that if the gasket is copper NO sealant, since its NOT he said its a toss up. Ive always done it this way, if the gasket has crush rings like this one does around the cylinder holes then NO sealant, This type has the crush rings ONLY around the cylinders but NOT the oil & coolant passages I USE a thin line of sealant around them for added assurance against leaks.

If the machined surfaces are truly flat, no sealant.

Was working in a Safety Capacity / parts delivering / TRUCK DRIVER??? Had the time of my life with the last part of that. Being a Driver for most of my Semi Adult Life. I wondered HOW I MEASURED UP with other drivers, well according to the guy that owned the truck that I drove I DID DAMN GOOD!! He sat co-pilot for 500 miles while I Piloted a 130,000 lbs of oversized materials to a couple of different maint yards.

Lots of oversized hauling up here......you should see some of the boats they haul in pieces from Valdez to Prudhoe. And when the wind blows they end up in the ditch and then the big cranes come out. Interesting stuff.

Lots of oversized hauling up here......you should see some of the boats they haul in pieces from Valdez to Prudhoe. And when the wind blows they end up in the ditch and then the big cranes come out. Interesting stuff.

Does the wind EVER NOT BLOW? its cold & I didn't want to know how cold (it just makes it colder) our load was wide and heavy and didn't pickup much wind.

When we refreshed my uncle's Case DC engine, the head gasket was kind-of beat up in spots. I cleaned it off, and my uncle handed me a can of silver spray paint. Sprayed a couple coats on each side, let it mostly dry, and installed it. But then, the DC is probably a low-compression engine and it doesn't (normally) exceed 1200 RPM; the paint trick might not work on more modern engines.

On Copper head gaskets I've used in the past I used a spray on called Copper Coat (Permatex I believe) spray both sides and stick it down , install the head.

Depends on where you are at. It seems to always blow in the Copper River valley.......Delta Junction, Tok and all the way to Valdez and around Anchorage (thats actually the sucking sound around anchorage because that place does suck) and it blow bad on the North Slope. Interior is usually pretty darn calm. We are lucky to get a breeze in Summer and even less wind in the winter time.

I have used K&W Copper-Coat spray.
