While driving down the road in 5th gear today I heard a loud POP and the engine free revved. I thiught 5th gear nut had backed off so I pulled down into 4th to no avail. Instantly I knew I had broken an input shaft. Pulled the transmission and sure enough that was the case. I have an NV4500 with a Carolina Clutch cerametallic disc. After pulling the transmission and pulling the clutch I found that my clutch had been slipping also. Can anyone advise the beast place to purchase a heavy duty mainshft for a reasonable price. Is installation very difficult. Any special steps to perform when replacing. Thanks for any help in advance.

Any research you do here will bring you to Peter at South Bend Clutch, He is the MAN, I currently have a smaller SBC and need to upgrade to a double disk, I called Peter and told him my predicament and he said he would knock off a significant amount of $$$ since I already have one of his clutches. Thats how customer service should be, you buy a clutch and exceed the power rating on it and he still will knock off money for a new one. A++++++ in my book. http://www.southbendclutch.com BTW the SBC DD comes with a larger input shaft

Call Standard Transmission 1-800-783-8726 and ask for Joe, they can supply all the parts for a transmission repair, as for the other questions, can't help on those.

hey if you are in a pinch and need an input shaft i have a factory one from when i swapped mine out i will send to you for shipping. let me know and i will get it out the door.

aside from that the 5 speeds are pretty simple things. i have rebuilt mine twice and it was too bad. standard transmission has a manual you can get, its spendy but helpful. anyways i have a luk cerametalic with low miles, with flywheel and all that jazz if you are in a bind i will all but give to ya if you need it.

Yep SBC was getting theirs from Haisley and ran into some quality control issues. Peter has been machining them and now has the cryogenic machine to cryo them with.

i think they run 750-800 or so. i just got one with my DD and the install is a piece of cake. four bolts slide in some bearings lude the seal and slide on the new snout with some sealant and bolt it on. takes longer to get them out of the box than ti install.

you can buy them individualy from Piers.

you do realize you have to update your flywheel too right?

Thanks N. Bowlin

Thank you very much for the offer. That is above and beyond anything I would have expected. I have a DD on the way from SBC along with the 1-3/8" shaft. Had to break open my piggy bank but I should have done this in the first place. "Buy the best cry once"

no problem.

glad you have it in hand. but i know what its like to need something and not be able to afford it for a while. i had to have my buddy buy my dd and input. then when we went home on leave i bought him a kimber gold match 2 and a camcorder. anyways good luck to ya.
