Has anyone tried these halo projector lights? I just saw them on ebay and wondered if anyone knew if they were better or worse than the stock headlights. Thanks!

Not Likely

I haven't tried them, but I am going to go out on a limb and so no. Here is why:

-Real projector beams rock. No doubt about it. They need a little more time to aim them, but once they are properly set up, the project a clear, well defined line that puts light only where you need it. As a result, they are better in all weather (and much better in fog/rain/snow). You get much more light on the road using the same wattage bulb.

-I install OEM projector beams on every car that I can: Which is to say cars that have an OEM or Stock project beam set up for use in Europe. The OEM parts guarantees the engineering and quality behind the projector beam set up.

-However, I doubt the inexpensive (non OEM) ones on e-bay are up to snuff. Real projector beams use real lenses, made of glass. Just like with a camera, quality optics cost money. I doubt that the inexpensive (non OEM) projectors are any good.

-To the best of my knowledge, there is no stock or OEM projector beams made for our trucks. All of the ones that are available are cheap parts that have no DOT (or the European equivalent) ratings or testing. I also have found that these "tuner" parts use the lowest quality materials, and often don't fit properly.

-"Halo" rings or "Angel Eyes" are something BMW did many years ago to meet the European "city light" regulation. "City lights" are low wattage running lights that meet some cities light pollution regulations (they are used in well lit areas that you don't need headlights for. City lights are designed to control light pollution). They do nothing for us in the US other than aesthetics.

Hope this helps.

Bernie interesting on the halos.

Viper,

I bought those off of ebay ,here's what they are. the so called projector is powered by a H1 halogen, not real bright the inner is a cheap plastic reflector with another H1 bulb, the unit is SAE. I bought a set and tore them apart ripped out the inner reflector unit . Purchased a set of Bi-xenon HID's and mounted these in the inner spot. I had Joel at Britebox build box to power these as I didn't want them to hiccup going from low to high. If your not willing to do something like this keep your stock lights I think they are better. I will be posting my project on the forum when I find the time.

p-Bar:

Thanks. Again, I think H1s are plenty bright, if they go through an actual ellipsoid projector beam.

Here is what I use on my BMW street cars:

(but, the same ones can be found for less at bavarian autosport).

I use the stock system to trigger relays powering the bulbs. This way I can put what ever wattage bulb in I want. The low beams are plenty powerful enough with the 55W H1s. I usually put a 100W H1 in the high beam position, although the stock 55W is still plenty powerful.

I did this in place of HIDs. It was less money, and with a true projector beam all of the light is getting put where it needs to be. I had the option of putting HIDs in as well, but it just wasn't neccesary.

I wouldn't mind doing the same sort of thing on my truck. Any suggestions?

Bernie,

I like those 100 watt H1's those would rock in my hi beams. PM me your e mail I'll send you some pics of how I did it.

Thanks for the info guys! I guess I'll be staying with the stock lights. I just thought the projector lights with the black frame would look sharp on my truck but I'm also worried about functionality. Thanks again.

Don't waste your money, they are crap. I puchased and installed, they have a poor light pattern (worse than stock). I sent them back for a refund.
