I've installed an Icom IC-706 in my Gen3-HO. My son has also put a 706 in his Gen2, non-HO. His works great. Mine, at least on 20M, is totally unusable when the engine is running. The engine is generating an overwhelming amount of static that is rpm related. It is not a whine like an alternator but more of a rapid snapping sound like one might experience with the ignition on a gasser. I'm suspecting that it is the electric injectors. This would explain why my sons rig with mechanical injectors is dead quiet. I'm thinking that I'm going to have to install clamp around suppressors on each injector wire.

Has anyone else experience this problem, and if so, how did you resolve it?

Thanks,

Dale

AHHHH SOOooo Grasshopper - you are now experiencing the notorious injector hash the Ford guys have been putting up with for so long... ;)

Dunno about the new Dodge, but the best fix we came up with on my ham/RVing bud's '99 Ford, was to thoroughly encase as much of his injector and other underhood wiring as possible in aluminum foil - all well bonded at various ground points... It was a real PAIN on his Ford - but knocked injector racket from 20 over down to about S6 - which is pretty much ambient backround atmospheric noise anyway. His worse band was 40 meters - 20 was bad, but not as much...

LOVE my TOTALLY quiet '02 and IC-706MKIIG... ;)

Dale,

I installed my '706 about seven mounths ago with a Diamond dual band SG7900 VHF/UHF antenna, no HF at that time. I installed a Hi-Q 4/80 screwdriver antenna to the front tow hook about three weeks ago prior to a cross country trip. I did not have time to properly RF ground the antenna prior to leaving, but even so it worked just fine, many good contacts on 20, 17 and 15. I did notice a small amount of hash from the "truck" but it did not in any way make the setup unusable. The power for the '706 goes directly to the driver-side battery and the antenna is matched with an "unun" matching transformer.

I had similar problem with CB installation, I had run the antenni cable through the firewall into engine compartment then outside, I was picking up a helluva noise from the VP-44, (mine is 99) I rerouted the antenni through the floor and installed a noise filter in the 12 volt supply at the radio, no more noise. bg
