For the past couple weeks, most every time I shift my '06 automatic out of park it hangs up just like your not pushing on the brake to release it. I took the dash apart around the steering column thinking I might see a pin hung up or a solenoid not working or something. Well I didn't learn anything. I'm sure one of you know what happens when you press on the brake pedal to releases the shift lever-to get it out of park. Now I just grit my teeth an give it a quick yank. Thanks

I had an old Dodge full-sized van that would do that. It turned out that I was causing it myself.

When I would pull into a parking spot on a hill, I would have the wheel turned and hold it while putting the truck in park, turning the ignition off, and removing the key.

It was the torque the front end was putting on the steering whell that would prevent me from taking the truck out of park.

The next time it happens, try turning the wheel before moving the shift lever. If that helps, then you're doing the same thing.

The final solution for me was to make sure there was no strain on the steering before I shut the engine off.

One other thing I can think of is to use the parking brake if you aren't already. It would take some of the load off the gears when sitting in park.

Mine started doing the same thing just before the 36k warranty expired and I was 1,500 miles from home. By the time I got home the warranty was history. A friend who was formerly a local Dodge dealership mechanic put me in contact with the transmission mechanic at the same dealership who agreed to look at it on his lunch break. The problem on mine was twofold: the electric solenoid locking device that holds the shifter in park was not fully retracting when the brake pedal was depressed and the ball (looks like a 1/4" ball bearing and rides on the ratchet device inside the transmission to provide the detents for each gear) had a burr on it. The tech replaced the ball and ratchet with good but used parts from another transmission and disconnected the solenoid device at my request. Now I don't have to depress the brake pedal to move the shifter, an annoyance anyway. I'm the only driver so there's not much risk of unintentional shifts.

My 05 did that till it ran away after jumping into reverse. It jumped into reverse after it sat all day and was started from the ground reaching in for the key.

The dealer adjusted the linkage and now it always comes out like it is suposed to. Before there was times I almost ripped it off the dash after playing with the key, brake etc.

Be carfull were you leave it running it could also be one of the ones that jumps into reverse on its own and takes off.
