Just did my first oil and filter change. Took 30 minutes. Was harder to get the new filter on. I used a Mac tool oil filter wrench. It slid down along side the back of the filter but between the wire and it. The handle was out toward the fender. I just slid down and worked around the filter but I moved it up to about 1 1/2" from the top to have more room for the handle. I worked tight as I moved handle tight and turned slowly till just loose before oil came out. Removed opposit way, put 1 gal baggy on and took off.

The oil drain plug was just tight, to me not tight enough. Home Depot make an orange 5 gal bucket that just fits, all you have to do is angle to get plug and hand out. Filled 2/3 way up. I noticed the fill mark on the dip stick is at 10 qt to top of add mark and 2 qt to top of full mark. So, 10 qt plus 1 qt to put in middle of adjustment marks. So what if you put in 12 qt to top of full mark where it states on dip stick, Would that be so wrong?

unless you have done something to change the capacity of your system, 11 quarts is full. the crankcase, oil pan and filter are all constants, from cummins. let it sit overnite, and check again in the am before you start it. you may be surprised to find it at the full mark. if not, mark the stick where full is for YOUR truck.

On my dip stick

Really, The stick and the manual states 10 to the add mark and 2 to the full mark and just 1 will put oil in the middle exactly. Now I'm confused.

just let it sit overnite and check it in the am. mine wasonly about 1/2 way between add and full, the last time i changed it--but the next am it was precisely on the full mark... ... unless yours is different, as i understand it, 11 quarts is the proper amount. 10 for the change if you don't change the filter, (why) and 11 if you do. somebody else jump in and correct me if i'm wrong?????

11 is with a stock engine and stock oil filter change. 1qt for the filter 10 qts for the cummins belly.

10 + 1 = 11 it says so in both owners manual and service manual and puts oil level just where it ought to be.

Just did my first oil change on the 2002 last weekend. I was really disappointed - I was prepared for a battle, but the oil filter came right off with my standard old strap-type filter wrench!



I did find out that the heavier flange oil drain plug I ordered from Geno's doesn't fit the 2002 - the threaded diameter on the stock 2002 drain plug is quite a bit smaller than the plug Geno's sent.

Like others have said, check your oil in the morning before start-up. Should be at the full mark,11 quarts should be it. As far as the drain plug goes, what year is your truck? On the 2002's you should torque the plug to 35 ft/lbs. That doesn't seem very tight but it's what they recommend. The older models I believe were to be torqued to 47 ft/lbs.

When changing my oil, I take 3 1 gallon containers of Rotella and drain 1 quart for later and pour in the rest. Always wind up with 11 quarts. Works for me.
