Hard Hats - Yes / No?

I was in the Navy for a little over 8 years, and I hated the fact that they made us wear hard hats and safety glasses while we were in the yards. Now, I'm a steelworker, and I still don't like wearing them, but I've seen a number of heads and eyes saved by them, maybe even a life or two.

The job I retired from, working in construction, required them.

The one I was first issued was an aluminum one similar to the WW1 doughboy style.

Last one I had was a plastic version.

Granted, they were a PIA, but they do work.

What gets me is the news articles that show a construction accident with a worker working in a trench and no safety vest or hard hat.

Whats wrong with that pic?
