Have a 1992 Ctd with 160,000 miles on origanal transmission. I have changed transmission fluid ever year since new. I used to pull a 5th wheel, but i bought a 01 HO so i could install a ehaust brake. Anyway, my 92CTD shifts on a delay intill warm. When it reaches operating temps it shifts fine. Could it be the TPS? Need some in put. Thanks Ron

Is it slow shifting into all gears or just overdrive? If all gears then it could be a line pressure problem. If just into OD, is probably the TPS. There also is a temp sensor that could be acting up. There are a few guys here that know a heck of a lot more about transmission's than me and hopefully they will see this post and give some input for you.

Have you tried using synthetics in it or do you already use it? It makes a difference in my 5 speed out in really cold weather.

It sounds like you have some internal seal problems. Over time, they harden and loose some of the elasticity they had when new. Once the transmission is warm (operating temp) the seals become a bit more flexible and more efficient. You could try adding some "seal freshener" to the ATF. It may reduce your symtoms in the short term.

Now I may be wrong, and someone correct me if I've got this bass-ackwards.

If you are willing to "live with it" for the time being you shouldn't have any major problems unless you're hauling major loads or heavily fueled and working it hard.

In the end, you'll need to have it reworked. I think that 160K is entering the "expected range" for things to start popping up with the A-518. Some guys go 200K plus and not a problem of any kind, others, less.

Just start 'er up, place in "N" and let it warm a bit longer before pulling out and hitting the road.

Get on the phone and start looking for some "Jones-Motor purr" put that into the unit and run it for two to three days. Then pull the valve body and check the control balls for wear and groving in the seperator plate. Check control valves for freedom of movement. Clean, polish out lips formed by balls, replace balls as needed, assemble, new filter and fluid.

That should get you going for another few years.

The "Jones" will clean everything and treat the seals.

p. s. DO NOT spill any "Jones" on your paint.
