Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Muffler or not

Hi All, For a while (sometimes) I've had to crank longer than normal to start only when its warmed up and been shut down for 10 - 15 min. it always fires right up cold. Today I came out of a store and it would not start. Cranked and cranked, no go. I cracked #1 and #3 inj. and it finally started. Drove home on pins & needles. I gave it a good stab in 4th gear and went sideways, no loss of power. After I got home I shut down and it started right up. Waited 15 min. and had to crank for 10 sec. Now it shutters at 1700-1900 rpm (no load) and smokes real bad white.

I have 18 lb. fuel pressure with a Raptor pump, 14 lb. @ WOT. fuel lines are 1/2".

Checked codes w/Smarty and get 0602 (map) 0113 (iat) and 1693.

0113 has been there for couple of years even after replacing it.

I switched relays around for ASD and Fuel pump as suggested by J. Landry in previous posts but no change. (can't be that easy)

Thanks for any ideas.

I hate to say it but, inejction pump is having issues. Any time you get white smoke like that its a late injection event for some reason.

The big question is if the problerm is in the pump or being introduced by false readings on sensors.

If you don't have these problems cold it could still be a sensor but more likely the IP is starting to having issues internally.

It started up and ran just fine this morning. No smoke, no shutter, perfect.

Checked codes again and have 1693, 0013 (iat) but no 0237 (map)

In my first post I had the wrong code for map, (0602) is associated w/ smarty.

Would a bad map sensor w/ heat related issues cause all this? Even a no-start/

If its the VP then thats what it is, I just hate to change that out and still have the same problem. As for now Im afraid to drive it and, its my only buggy.

Thanks again for any help. Bill.

Anything is possible with the electronics. Pull the MAP sensor and spray clean it with electrical contact cleaner and see if that helps.

Its possible a cam or crank sensor is also throwing erroneous readings into the mix when they warm up. The underhood environment is not very friendly.

The next time you have a hard warm start try disconnecting the coolant temp sensor plug and disconnecting power to the LP, start with the LP, one at a time and see if starts any differently.

The 1693 error could be the problem also. Have cleaned all the battery post connections and grounds lately? Load tested the batteries?

OK, cleaned all 4 battery posts real well and, load tested, all is good there. Also cleaned an already clean map sensor.

Ran good for a couple of days of short trips, total of only about 40-50 miles.

Today, 90 degrees out I went about 10 miles shut down and no start again.

I disabled Raptor lift pump, cranked like crazy and if finally started.

Comming home it would build boost (45 lb) sometimes and sometimes only 10 lb. Got home and shut down and it would not start. I ran cold water on top of VP to cool down the electronics and it fired right up. It always starts right up cold.

It still misses bad (no load) at 1700-1800 rpm w/lots of white smoke

Checking codes w/Smarty I no longer get 0237 (map) or 1693 but now I get the infamous 0216. Does this confirm its time for VP ? Its got 90k on it, wire tapped from day one. What direction would you go for a new one? I plan on keeping truck forever but BC prices are so far above MWFI and II All suggestions appreciated

Thanks, Bill.

VP-44 is bad, time for a new one.

As far as which one, toss a coin and pick a rebuilder. IMO, it doesn't seem to make a lot of difference if your just looking for a rebuild. The Hotrod VP44 is supposed to be better but not sure it figures out that way.

Pump

What town here in WI? I put in a MWFI pump about 40k ago, and am afraid it is going south. I have had the 1700=/- rpm load miss for a while. Also, my mileage dropped 3-4 mpg when I changed it. It also doesn't have the power. Thought maybe I put the key in wrong, but I pulled it and it was right. If I have to do it again, I'll go BC. Good luck,

Dave
