ok so for the past month or two my truck has had trouble starting when its hot. i mean first thing in the morning when its cold it fires up like a new truck but if i go down the road and get it hot and then pull into a store and shut it off it takes 2 to 4 seconds of cranking to get it to fire. iknow i have the MAPS to replace but would that cause this???? or is it more serious like injection pump cause i just replaced that less than 10k ago. i got the injection pump from thouroughbred diesel. thanks in advance.

First thing I'd check is your fuel pressure. Do you have any gauges? Did your transfer pump get replaced when you did your VP?

Fuel pressure is good.

Hard start hot is always a PITA to diagnose.

Have you checked for any codes in the ECM/PCM?

MAP sensor will just cause drive ability issues. Start up is automatically advanced timing and full fuel.

Take the Edge out of the loop. Still hard start - Yes/No

Check for smoke on both cold and hot start up - Yes/No

Hot start, rev test. Engine at operating temp. Trans in Neutral/Park. Fully depress the throttle and hold for a few seconds. The tack should climb smoothly and quick. Other than a little puff of black at first, the exhaust should be clean. Holding at high idle, the engine should run smooth.

Could be a VP issue, crank sensor going out, or too much fuel pressure at start up.

got to lookin in the haynes manual for the crank sensor and it said that some trucks dont have crank sensors they work off of the cam sensor and if thats the case then i replaced the cam sensor when i put the new vp in... but i got the sensor at advance auto. should i have gotten at cummins? oh yeah just got in from putting in maps... didnt help my starting problem. and the codes i have gotten so far are p1693,p0237,p0238

If your truck has a crank sensor, it will be located just above/inboard of the starter... as in easier to replace the sensor if you pull the starter.
