Hard Starting

This only happens when the truck is stone cold (sits for 6 or more hours).
When starting is puffs white smoke and idles real rough for about 30 seconds, then all is fine. Been doing this for the past couple weeks. Could I have a bad tank of fuel (Fling J truck stop in Post Falls Idaho)? Truck only has 31k, have been running Quad tow mode since 15K. I put the bypass pig tie in to eliminate the quad box, and its even a little work on cold start.

Could my lift pump be going? 2004. 5 quad cab

I just changed the fuel filter, even though it only had 3K on it, no change.

If I check for codes by holding the odo but with key of and then turning to on I get a message that says ccodes, then A4_78.

I've seen two likke yours, but both with a lot more miles. Leaking injectors is the problem with them.

Most likely the injector(s) leaking fuel into the cylinder when shut off. You really should find the offending cylinder(s) and get the injector out of there. If it sticks open you can melt down a piston very quickly.

1. Are injectors covered by the Cummins 7yr/100k warranty?

2. If not, can a competent shop find the bad injector?

3. Iis there an aftermarket injector that would be more reliable? Not neccisarily looking for big HP, I'm happy with the quad 65 hp tow box.

1-Injectors are covered under the 5year 100k warranty.



2-They probably need the star scan tool to shut them off individually.



3-F-1's There the best you can get.

I took it in to the ******* on 7/28, let it sit overnight and they were able to reproduce the problem. They did TSB 18-037-04 (ECM Flash).

It's been a month and I haven't had any issues since. I'll keep my fingers crossed!
