I posted this about two weeks ago and had a couple of response. My truck is hard to start after it sits for a day or more. I replaced the return fuel line last year and just check the lines today and both are ok, no sign of leakage. Someone suggested the fuel return flow valve. What is entailed in checking this, do simply remove the bolt and check the spring. Are there any other suggestions that can be handled at home before I call dodge or cummins.

Is the truck park level during the time that its a day or more? If its sits on a hill. . is it nose up or nose down?

lhend50,

Checking the valve is pretty easy. It's on the engine side of the injection pump even with the forward delivery valve. It looks like a banjo fitting. Cram a rag in the gap between the pump and the engine to catch the washers when you remove the valve. If it's the same as the one in my '95 you can take it apart. The spring inside should be a little bit over 1/2" long. I think . 550 is the exact measurement. Some people stretch it to get it back into spec but I think that damages the spring. I made a shim from a small washer for mine. It's been about 50k miles since then. I still have good fuel pressure and it starts fine after sitting for a couple of days.

There are other things that can cause hard starting, but this is a common problem.
