Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) hard starting

brother has an 02 ctd 47re and says its starting hard-lots of cranking-grid heater?fuel heater-i know that he does not wait to start most of the time-any info would help-thanks in advance-a subscription for xmas is in order for himi should say just changed ff

I had a hard starting 24 valve. (165,000 miles) Hard starting was worse in hot weather. Took it to the dealer and got a total misdiagnosis. Finally took it to a good independent diesel fuel injection shop, who diagnosed a failed injector pump and lift pump. Replaced them ($1600) and truck has run perfectly ever since.

check the filter first, then check the lift pump and after that check the VP44 ---most times it's the lift pump--chris
