Are we talking like 15-30 seconds of cranking? Particularly bad after being parked nose high? If so you'll find a leaking fuel return line on the side of the block above/behind the fuel filter.

My truck is a little slow to start, 5 seconds or so. The batteries are going I can tell. Try starter contacts or batteries. If the truck runs like hell, check the rubber fuel lines.
 
You don't say if your truck is auto or manual. The idle is probably too low. For an auto it should be at least 750 RPM in gear with the AC on. For a manual it should be at least 750 with the AC on. 800 is better. I still give mine a little pedal to start instantly.
 
As I recall from conversations about this some time ago, having to push the pedal down a bit for a quick start is not a cause for concern. I really don't recall the exact reasons the pump needed this bit of help.



I really like my engine to idle around 600 to 650 rpm, it's quite, seems to work out fine,,,,,if I push the pedal down that small bit necessary for the first revolution start.
