Very pleased with cold starting!

I have noticed that that applying 1/8 pedal she will start very easy then stumble if I apply any more pedal she sounds like it is skipping real bad for about 15 seconds. Tons of blue smoke,(is this normal)?

Grid heater disconneted,keeps staying on.

I also plug in the heater when temp is below 45 degrees. I use a timer that turnes it on at 5:30 then at 7:00 am off to work. I use the block heater primarily to warm the oil so it will start lubing faster.

Just my $. 02.

Very very plaesed with cold starting!!

Single digit's in the KC area this morning when I came in from work. It fired up like normal again, with very little or no blue smoke, mostly just vapor. I was having the hard start problem when cold, but seems better now since I tightened up the nuts on the heater grid relays. Last week, it fired a few times & died several times, & when it finally started, it missed & spewed tons of white smoke, something it's never done cold. I think I was starting it with little or no heat from the grids.

Living in Wyoming I get a ton of cold morning starts. So far I have been very impressed with the Cummins and its ability to start in single digit temperatures.

However the other day I hear a new noise when I started it up... . the temperature was around 10deg or so... I did the "wait to start" cycle twice and it started right up. Once it started there was a clicking noise in the engine... I am thinking that it is either the oil pump or fuel pump, because once it warms up it goes away. Do any of you guys have this, and is it something to worry about?

I agree with the air sensor repost, as I have just broken open the book to the resistance values.

The last couple of days I have had hard starting and I think the grid heater is just not working as the lights do not dim at all. But today after work, before I started it, I checked and there was power at both grid heater terminals while the key was in the heating position - then it fired right up perfectly. Temp today about 35 this morning, maybe 40 this afternoon.

From the quote above, I get the idea that it could be the manifold air temperature sensor - does anyone have the resistance values on thoses? Perhaps I should check mine for oil contamination?

I know the "Wait to start" light comes on and goes off and I can hear something clicking, even when the grid heaters were not working.

The truck runs perfectly after starting and has no problem continuing to run at idle unless it's around 10° or below - then it needs a little foot action.

Thanks,

Blake:confused:
