This may or may not be want is the problem, but it sounds much like a clogged fuel heater filter. Your fuel pump may not be able to reach the injection pump because of the clog in the screen in the fuel preheater. I have a 96 with 170K on it and it just started doing want you indicated. We also have another 96 with 128k which just had the fuel pump and preheater replaced. It would not start as well. If the truck was parked on a incline with the engine lower than the tank, it would start on the second try with white smoke. My son has the other 96 with 170K on it and is going to call Cummins in Ocala Fl tomorrow and find out if the

screen can be replaced or cleaned without a new pre heater which is in excess of 200dols from Dodge. The pump is also 200dols from Dodge. The 128K truck was fixed at a 5 star dealer in Chesapeake VA. The Cummins man there said the pump comes apart when the screen cloggs. The Dodge Dealer was Greenbriar

Dodge. Anyway it cost a lot of money to get it straight from Dodge. Will find out if they were just selling parts.

Hey Lop, You need to tell us a little about your truck if you really want some help. Look at the "Signature" after most posts and make one for your self.

If your truck is more than a few years old, it's most likely the fuel return line. A very common problem.

If your truck is new, could be a lot of things.
