How new are your front u-joints? I had the same problem w/ stiff steering causing a wander due to oversteering, played w/ the adjustments on the gear box with no success.

I then jacked up the whole front end and manually moved the steering and could see the drivers side u-joint binding.

Replaced both of them and now the truck steers smooth and easy.

Hope this helps...

Check the sector shaft adjustment. It may be a hair too tight, especially if it doesn't want to return to straight after a turn without any of your effort. Otherwise, you may need a new box.

Have you tried backing off the overcenter adjustment? If it's too tight, your steering can feel stiff.

(or is that the same as sector shaft adjustment, DieselB59?)

overcenter adjustment

What exactly does this thing do??? I know where it is... what does it do when too loose / too tight?

Too loose and the steering gets sloppy. Too tight and you have stiff steering. I adjusted mine a while back. It's pretty sensitive.
