I have a 2001 auto with the small 9cm2 turbo that has the hardlined waste gate. I recently installed a Power Edge and now I need to fix the wastegate so I can get more boost. I have tried to get the j-hook from TST or the little plug thing from DD and neither of them sell it seperatly from the boost module. So we need to come up with a solution. I don't really want to buy a new turbo (yet) and I would prefer to retain at least a stock appearence. Anyone have an idea??

I am in the same situation. The most boost I get with the edge on is 20-21. HVAC has kindly provided me some advice on where to start.

We will have to remove the actuator from the turbine, then either fit a restrictor inside the "pipe", or epoxy it closed and drill a small opening. Also need to drill a bleed hole between restrictor and actuator. I have not yet tried this, and am ALL EARS to anyone who has.

Ok, make that three... I'm in the same boat. My PE is on it's way. In my stock form I hit 20 lbs of boost.

How does the PE feel on an otherwise stock '01 auto??

<font color=teal>Wouldn't be possible to drill a small hole in this tube to bleed off the boost and keep the wastegate closed longer. This is partially how the TST elbow works on my 12 valve it resricts as well as bleed some(very small hole) of the boost off. </font>

<font color=blue>My solution is to run it stock for now. When I get the injectors added I will toss the dinky 9cm turbo and replace it.

Although I may try to modify the wastegate a bit before doing that. Its still kinda up in the air, the 4" exhaust might hold my temps down and not require the "extra" boost for cooling purposes with just the PowerEdge. Guess I'll know by Sunday. Exhaust is here!

HVAC told me the same thing, except he told me to make it a removable plug. I may do this I am just not ready to plug and drill, I am waiting for a more elegant fix.

Scooby - just wait, you will like it. I have posted in the massive power edge post about how it feels so I will leave it at this. YOU WILL LIKE IT.

Drawson - I don't know why drilling a small hole wouldn't work, it may not let out enough pressure. I think the other part of the normal boost elbow is a restrictor of some type.

Kat - let us know what happens, I am planning on injectors this fall, will probably run this winter with the PE off as extra horse power and ice do not mix well. I am getting the injectors because they make the truck start easier and run a bit better in the cold (this is according to a DC service manager).

I wonder if I can buy just the actuator-hardlined piece at ??? and modify one and still have a "warrany" one?? :)

Sounds easy enough. I will have to find that small drill bit and some small wire, should not be too hard. What kind of epoxy??

If there is any one going to a cummins shop today, could they check and see if you can buy just the hardlined piece for the turbo, I want one to practice on and I am a long long way from a cummins dealer right now. I know they will ask "why do you want that", tell em you crushed it removing your oil filter with a pipe wrench.

I might note that when we modified Mike Crossley's turbo, we tested it and found it took 80 psi to get the wastegate to move! I am not sure you need to drill the plug since the pressure which would get through the restriction would seem to have no effect on the wastegate operation. I would think the bleed hole in the tube might still serve a purpose in that it would allow air to enter the tube so as not to hamper the diaphram moving/wastegate opening at high drive pressure levels (WOT).

BTW, most drills won't chuck up tight enough for teensy bits (035). Your trusty Milwaukee may not work. You may have to take your turbo actuator to the dentist for modifications #ad

The only question we have is how to get the rubber plug back into the turbo housing? Should it be inside the housing or between the tube and the housing?
