Rear Dif Oil Chg - What do I need to know?

I am in the market for a hartop tonnaeu.

What brands and models have you used? Any recomendations or models to stay away from?

I am thinking about Leer 700 series or ARE LSII... paint matched.

Bedlocker electric looks nice but is a little pricey.

I presently have a Leer 100XQ cap that within the last 3 months have had the glass replaced twice. Both times covered by insurance as it was others fault but I just don't want to deal with it again. 7. 5' piece of shaped glass... . $589 for one side to be replaced. Cap cost me $1400 brand new. .

Thanks, Jeff

My buddy has the leer700 on his titan and it looks great... . i have been thinking about going with one for my truck. He says that he has had no problems with any leaking or anything plus its fairly easy to remove if you need to use the bed of your truck for bigger items...

I have a Snug Lid sl, ran me about $1K. Very well built, I walk and stand on mine. I'm about 160lbs. Some pics are in my RR. I can take more if needed.

Leer 700

I too have the Leer 700 series on mine with the optional electric lock wired into the vehicle fob and it works great. No leaks, and now I have a secure compartment when the wife drags me shopping! :-{}

Only complaint, that pretty maroon cover on the back of my truck is heavy when you go to take it off. Requires 2 at a minimum and I would suggest 3 to avoid a chiropractor visit. Not that it is extremely heavy, but at the height of a 4x4 and the angle you have to take it off 3 people make it much easier.

Hope that helps!

P. S. $1150 installed with the electronic lock.

Jeff,

I have the ARE LSII on my 2004 truck. It's a nice looking cover, and the design takes on the look of the truck's hood. The locking system is smooth and solid. I was told by the vendor, although free upgrade at the time, to stay away from the keyless entry that's used on the ARE tonneau... not very reliable. ARE may have fixed that issue by now... ?

The color match is perfect and fits the bed nicely. The cover weatherstripping keeps out water, but the tailgate is another story. Therefore, regardless, unless gap between bed and tailgate is addressed, you'll get water in the bed anyway.

The cover is held in place by four mounting brackets and can be removed easily... the cover weighs around 200 pounds. The cover uses its own frame to absorb the stress and weight of the cover when opened and closed.

I looked at others, Leer and SnugTop, but liked the features of the ARE (except keyless entry). I paid $858 installed.

HardTop Tonneau Covers

I agree witha fellow contributor - I have had the "undercover" brand for about 2. 5 years and no problems. They have improved the locks to make it more convenient. Looks good with the bright silver paint and is very rugged.

I have bought ARE's for years for my trucks as well as my employee's. I am guessing over 50 the last ten years. Never an issue. Easy off and on. I like the new mounts. We can have one off in less than 5 minutes. Paint has always been perfect and matched the truck throughout ownership. Most of the ones we have bought have been raised a little through the middle which gives you a few more inches of room. No electronic locks... just keys.

Thanks to all for the replies. . I am going to spend some time researching some of the brands I had not even heard of to see if any of them strike my liking.

I have heard good things regarding the ARE from a few differnet sources. The Snuglid and Undercover I am going to look into. I had never heard of the Snuglid?

Thanks again... Jeff

Does anyone have any experience with the Diamondback ?

I like the forward hinged section giving you access to the front of the bed, and the ability to use the top as a load floor. I'm considering purchasing one of these but I'd like to hear some first hand reviews before I shell out the $$$

I wish I had seen the Diamondback in person before I bought my Undercover. It looks very cool and a lot more versatile.

If you don't mind black, check out www.undercoverinfo.com

It's a lightweight, lockable hard cover. Very easy to take off and hang on the wall. Check it out.

I agree the Undercover tonneua is great. I have had SnugLid XL and they were fine, but too hard to remove.

PROBLEM is the Undercover only has models for Short Bed last time I looked for a friend and I beleive he has a LWB.

Go there and just click on the cover you're interested in.

I just got a 4 panel Fold-A-Cover from TruckAddOns.com below at a good price. They seemto carry most all the popular covers. My next door neighbor liked it so much he ordered one also. Then a good friend of mine saw it and also ordered one.

Check out

http://www.truckaddons.com/

Their prices were pretty good and all three of us got our covers within a week.

Hope this helps.

PS - The Fold-A-Cover locks the tailgate. The cover itself clamps on the bed and the only holes I had to drill were two small holes in the tailgate for the locking tab.

I ordered the same cover from truckaddons, as well. It arrived in 2 separate packages on different days, with the wrong address on them. The instructions to fit it were for a Ford. I tried emailing them and calling them and got a promise of help, which never materialized. In the end, I had to contact the manufacturer directly. I will not do business with these people again.

Well I think I have decided on Diamondback as my choice but just like Graham I would much rather hear from someone other than Diamondback telling how nice there cover is. I have never seen one of these on the road in all of my travels.

Is there not a TDR member that has a diamondback on one of their trucks?

Hoping for some diamondback positive feedback from a current user... .

Really looks like it hits all of my concerns of having a hard top.

Access, security, weather tite, removable if tall load is needed.

Is kinda pricey but looks like it would last a long time...

NO MORE GLASS!!! My Leer 100XQ must have over 20' of glass

Thanks, Jeff

Sounds like there are not any TDR members with a Diamondback top. Well I went and ordered my Diamondback cover with optional powder coated black. I will provide my feedback after it is installed. I went to a local dealer that carried this brand and checked the cover out. It looks awesome. I cannot begin to explain how sturdy it looks. The Black option looks to be 3 weeks of a wait so I willl chime back in after I install it.

Thanks, Jeff

My brother has a Diamond back on his short bed Chevy. Its a nice piece but he complains when he has to take it off to haul something.

I was also concerned about this but do not think it will happen to me to often. May be the difference of having a longbed verses the shortbed. Either half of the cover can flip 180 degrees by detacting the shocks of the cover. So I can take the rear half and open it completely onto the front half so I have over 3' of bedspace to carry something tall. At least that is my hope. Only time will tell. .

Has your brother ever commented on the winter? I had asked the rep about this freezing up in the winter and would be interested in how it has done in the cold. I am also thinking about adding some 3M clear protectant on the top of the bedrails where the seal from the cover will hit the body of the truck. I am fearful of wear over time.
