Lot of diesel in the engine oil

We have been discussing this at the "other" popular diesel site and it has been my experice just once. It seems that I was running down the highway in the heat. since then no repeat. I have suspected based on the sound and lack of reproducibility in colder conditions that it is the fan coming on. Really sounds a little like an airplane prop to me and if it were an out of balence anything I should be able to reproduce it.

Ok guys yesterday at the dealer they were told that it might be from the turbo. Said STAR knew about the DRONE at 2100 rpm and it was CREATED from the turbo and they were WORKING on it!Techs said with a stethoscope that at 2100 plus the DRONE/HUM could be heard from the turbo real easily. Thats in neutral also. My question was in a no boost condition why it was there! Got no answer etc. SO thats were that issue was left for now. ANY THOUGHTS?

Mr Ketchum, I think your noise is what mine sounds like.

I get it every time I go past 2000 rpm. from 2000 to 2500

nearly all the time. but it seems louder after warmed up.

If it's coming from the turbo(it very well could be) maybe

they will get it figured out yet. I hope.

Just wanted to chime in and say that I have the vibration at 2k rpms also. I agree that it seems worse the further you drive or after the truck is warmed up. I don't think it is the driveline on my truck at all because even with the truck in park if I rev it up to 2k the vibration is there. I just thought it was a Cummins thing till I started reading stuff from pevious owners complaining about it. Hopefully they will get it worked out soon!

Mine is in neutral or in gear at 2000 plus. On a long trip it of course gets more noticeable. Sounds like a quadajet carb on a v8 with the air cleaner lid on upside down. At 70 it goes away. But between 60 and 70 its a real pain.

I get the same Vib/hum at around 2100 rpm. Took it to the dealer and they are replacing the Jack Shaft (Out of round) next week. I will post if it corrects the problem.

When I took delivery of my truck it didn't have a CTD decal on the drivers fender. So now I have to stay in the left lane all the time!

They are going to put one on next week also.

Well drove 200 miles of back two lane last afternoon and night. THE noise is at 2100 rpm give or take in any gear and goes away at 2400/2500 rpm. At one sweet spot in is VERY LOUD and can feel it tingle through steering wheel, pedals etc. Gonna call D. C. Monday and want a appointment with a REP. If their working on that issue thats fine but I gotta know WHAT it is! ANY MORE HINTS?Oo.

my cousin and I checked mine out with a stethoscope and

we think #1 injector is the culprit in mine. I looked at it again

this morning and noticed #1 injector line is awfully close to

the intake manifold in one spot. but it's not touching. I don't

know. I'm gonna let the dealer check it out.

Has anyone noticed a correlation between vibration and engine performance? When mine has alot of vibration it is also not very responsive. Today I was driving on the highway and I felt no vibration. The truck was running like it had a "box" on it. I have never gotten that much power out of it before! This a really strange problem.

I have never driven mine when noise was not there,It just seems(maybe tuned in to it)that after a long drive it worse. But its always there. Same rpm etc. Like I said I'm calling D. C. customer complaint line. I want to meet with a rep. I know who he is and dealt with him in past. I wrote service in a D. C. dealer until two years ago. They did'nt nick name me Hounddog for nothing. I'll pursue it to the end. I did for my customers NOW its MY turn. :-{}

Jackshaft where?

SORRY!

Goes to show that not even a service advisor knows what he's talking about!

I looked up my Service Invoice and this is what they wrote:

"Road test found drive shaft vibration, checked on hoist front of rear shaft out of round. Needs Replacement CD#2 (Whatever CD#2 means)"

Anyway, they phoned to say part was in, so... Friday I will know whether or not it solves the problem.

I asked a few other folks about the JACKSHAFT it was like a what. In 25 years really never heard anything called that. Wayne they can call it normal but the cooments I got from service dept was D. C. was working on THAT problem . I really want to know the real skinny of THAT problem.

I have been following this thread for sometime now just to hear what all you other folks are experiencing regarding this drone\noise problem.

My truck has not done this since new it's slowly developed to it's present condition of very annoying. The droning noise starts at 51 mph peaks at 56 mph and dies out at 60 mph. I have no vibration associated with this. It only occurs when applying power , as soon as you remove your foot from the throttle the drone immediately stops, reapply the power it's instantly back. It happens in 5th or 6th gear.

My first 2003 was exactly the same as this one and I never had this problem. So I guess we are off to the dealer. Are there TSB's on this subject yet? Thanks. Pete

i have about 450 miles on my truck and today was driving on a concrete highway with the expansion joints every couple of feet. which kind of mimicks(sp) the thumping noise. It was most prevelant at 2000 rpm and seemed to be noticable in park and neutral. I am very interested to see what they finally come up with. and when someone finally does im sure ill have to fix it myself so it gets done right the first time...

Dan

Mine been there from day one. It never comes and goes. Starts at 1950/2000 rpm any gear, peeks at 2100/2300 and then starts to subside. Was told D. C. was aware of a noise from turbo? I'm still trying to CONFIRM this. The rep I met with wasnt the TECH rep. Paper work Rep. Said he wasnt aware and would look into this. There follow ups can take a very LONG time. I'm going to start pushing tomorrow. I want to know what issues about drones/vibrations etc. that THEY are working on.

Sounds like there replacing the front driveshaft and or front yoke.

Well... it turns out that it is the driveshaft that was to be replaced. However, when they took the new one out of the packaging it was damaged. Go-Figure!

That being said, I dropped the Truck off on Thursday evening and all they did was do an Oil Change and it took them until 3 pm Friday to call me to tell me my truck was ready and oh... by the way we had to re-order the Part!

Why is it, that the last thing you get is SERVICE whey you take your vehicle in to get Serviced!
