Hohn,

Not ALL Detroit Diesel two strokes are supercharged. 3-71's, 6-71's, 8-71's, 12-71's, 53 series, etc are not all supercharged. Many have turbos but a 2 stroke does not need to be supercharged to work.

They work better when turbo'd but it is not a requirement for them to work.

every detroit diesel 2 cycle has a roots type blower on it. these roots blowers are sometimes used on some gassers as superchargers [big top fuel blowers] a 2 cycle diesel engine with a blower is considered naturally asperated. all the blower is doing is to provice a positive pressure air charge to scavange the exhaust out of the cylinders. the only odd ball 2 cycle diesel engine without a blower is emd's turbocharged diesel 2 cycle engines. but, the turbo is also driven mechanically until 6th notch when it develops enough heat/flow to overcome the clutch [rpm of turbo drops from 15k to 12. 5k rpm when the clutch comes off]

large marine diesel engines that are 2 cycle [pistons 2meters diameter] have electric motor driven blowers to scavange before the turbo develop enough heat/flow to provide boost/scavanging air

So tell me what the general consensus is here now... .

Can it or has it been done, meaning a huffer feeding a large turbo??... . Any answers after all the comments above???.

I know the answer to this rather easy question... Yes,it has been done and is done on a regular basis. Now,before the naysayers drop in,I'll say the place I have seen it done on a regular basis, tractor pulling. Although you'll find most of them just spinning the huffer I have seen quite a few using them to feed a large turbo or a set of compound turbos. Ease of tunability is one of the main factors for doing them or using them. As for in a Ram Cummins, there are rumors abound about some being engineered to be built. Last story I have heard was 2 trucks in Ohio and 2 in Pennsylvania.

Centrifugal superchargers are common place in the auto industry for power, but, they will not be as effective in a diesel application as they need to be spun hard to be efficent. To make power with a huffer on a diesel there is one very good application for that, any ideas of what it is and why???Hmmm... ... ... Andy

P. S. -One thing I distinctly remember about my days driving the notorious "Double Breasted Yamaha's"(meaning the 6 or 8/V92's)was the best way to put yourself in the mood for the nights run. Upon arrival at the truck and before you climb the steps, open the door and SLAM it on you non-shifting hand hard. That way when you got in your were extremely t'd off and in the mood to whip the stick thru all 13 and keep the motor twisting hard and begging for the mercy it would never get. The 8v92 I drove had a 4x4 behind it and unless there was a flame flying from the stacks it was not being run properly,ah yes those were the days.....
