This winter there was several times that I started my truck up to the sound of someone banging on the engine block or transmission with a hammer for various amount of times then it would stop as abrutly as it started, now when I start it I get what to me sounds like a scuffing noise sometimes for a short amount of time and sometimes for long periods of time. It does it while parked and driving. I checked toque converter as best I could and found no problem,U-joints are tight and center support bearing runs cool. No known problems with trans operation and engine runs fine,no power loose. Baffled. Any help would be greatly appreceated,Thanks in advance.

Sounds like rod bearing to me, it stops abruptly because it takes a couple seconds to get oil pressure. Cracked flexplate would make the sound all the time though. A flexplate is what automatics use instead of a flywheel for a manual transmission.

Been around a cracked flexplate that acted like a knocked rod. Quiet when you gave it hard throttle and rattled like crazy hen you left off the gas. Generally I Agree with you though that the flexplate is an all or nothing noise.

I've had a few cracked flex plates do odd things. 78 Chevy P/U would knock when cold, and when you were on the throttle hard. We figured for sure it was a rod, pulled the engine found the flex plate cracked... replaced it... put the engine back in (without ANY dissassembly) and it was gone.

Try "catching" the engine as it shuts off. shut it off, and kick it back on right before it dies. If it has a big Clang, you have a cracked flex plate.
